Anyone take Triazolam (Halcion) to sleep?

Posted by socialdeviantjeff on March 3, 2004, at 1:26:34

Hello again.

My Pdoc just gave me Triazolam to for sleep problems. .125 mg to start.

My problems are as such: I can't qiet my mind enough to get to sleep before 3AM or so. I wake up around 9A to 12P and can't get out of bed for 30 minutes to 3 hours. Sleep for me is not restful at all. My Pdoc defined this "waking period" in the morning as phase 1 sleep. All of this has been much worse with the Abilify. I get much less deep sleep and I'm up later.

So..... Any Halcion stories are appreciated. Also, because of the short half-life, is this really effective for the "phase 1 sleep" I fall into in the mornings? TIA

I used to take Halcion years ago for occasional insomnia only, before I found that .5 mg. Xanax would help me just as well. There's a lot that could be said about Halcion, mainly that it's a very potent hypnotic and could induce a strong dependance and tolerance. There were reports way back that some people had had substantial memory loss from Halcion--they couldn't remember what they did from the time they ingested it until the time they fell asleep. Others, including myself, had some very intense dreams. Be careful with Halcion.

From ever since I can remember (about 5 years old) until I was 35 years of age sleep has always been a struggle for me. From the time a lay down to the time I actually fall asleep was always at least 2 hours. My bed has always looked like a animal slept in it & I must always roll over in one direction as my top sheet & blankets would end up on the floor on the right hand side & bottom sheet on the floor left hand side. When I got on Prozac & then Effexor, sleep became a virtual impossibility. My doc gave me a sciprt for Temazepam & on the first dose I went for two tablets (20mg), that was no help. Next night 40mg, nothing. Then 60mg, nothing. Finally 60mg plus a stiff drink, It gave me a sense of relaxtion & I got to sleep a little easier. After studying these pages I asked my doc for Remeron, I was prescibred 30mg but I wanted it solely for sleep & not for it's aledged antidepressant properties(was taking Efexor for that)& took just 15mg. Within 30 minutes my skull was numbed & all the endless thoughts that kept going around in my head before sleep were gone, I went to bed & was out like a light within 5 minutes. That was about 4 months ago, I now take 30mg & the numb head sensation/drowsiness is gone, but I still go to sleep within 5 minutes, amazing. Remeron causes drowsiness by being the strongest Histamine blocker on the market. It also improves sleep quality by blocking 5-HT2A which has proven to be good for sleep in many sleep studies. Other drugs that share H1 & 5-HT2A blockade are most of the TCA's, most of the original AP's & some of the new Atypical AP's like Zyprexa & Seroquel. If you haven't tried using any of these chemicals for sleep I recommend you give one a go. I believe the success of the TCA's Clomipramine & Amitriptyline as proven antidepressants is as much due to them giving a good night sleep as well as being Serotonin and/or Norepinephine reuptake blockers. This is a point that the SSRI designers missed when coming up with Luvox, Prozac, etc. Anti-Pyschotic drug designers have learnt their lesson. The first group where very non-selective, the second group where Selective on Dopamine(D2) blockade(ie:Haloperidol) and the newest group Zyprexa, Seoquel but not Risperdal are more like the original first group but with less side effects. Hopefully the true third Generation antidepressants will reflect the anti-pychotics, but there is no sign of them on the horizon.

Cheers,
Panda.

I ocassionally take .25 mg Halcion, but I think if racing thoughts are our problem - I call it "thinking too much" - Seroquel would be a better option - is for me anyway.

Halcion is supposed to knock yo out - put you to sleep within 30-minutes, according to my doc. It didn't and usually doesn't make me sleepy.

Effexor helped end my racing thoughts. Seroquel has given me great sleep and helped with mood, which of course is its true purpose. I would strongly agree with SadPanda that Remeron by far gave me the best sleep I have EVER had. Even splitting a 25mg tab into quarters worked. Too bad I had tremendous weight gain with it and had to stop taking it.

Give Seroquel a try. 100mg works for me.

Thanks folks. lots to think about. I can't use TCA's, they tend to induce psychosis in me. Wierd but true. I think I'll try my Perphenazine (old school AP) with the Halcion tonight. I tried one last night and it sure knocked me out, although I had the same waking problem. I suppose it will take some time.
