Looks like Xanax long term for me!!!!

Posted by ace on February 15, 2004, at 20:37:14

After trialing so many, i feel the good old fashioned Xanax will be the one....for anxiety it is a real killer, and with Nardil, WOW! So great!

It has also demonstrated efficacy in OCD and depression....

I will more than likely begin it in a week or so...

Beginning at 0.5 bid titrating to 2mg per day and staying at that dose....

There is no factual basis to all the scare stories about benzos...they are brilliant and, if treated with respect, treat u the same!!

Good to hear, Ace. Sometimes, the solution is simple. Why not try the XR version, do they have that down under?

I've switched to the Xanax XR. I was stupid enough to go, "Isn't the conversion from Klonopin to Xanax the same dose?" After my doc said, "Xanax is ussually 1/2 as potent, so let's try 6mg" So I talked him down to 3mg of Xanax XR. Had the worst anxiety ever these past few weeks. Not nearly as helpful as Klonopin at 3mg/day divided by 3 doses.

I don't get Xanax. Maybe for anxiety, but it seemed to give my blood a weird effect. With alcohol (and my max is 1-2 drinks, I'm a lightweight and have had to accept this while I remain in college) I get all red in my face.

That seems to tell me it can't handle drug interactions blood-wise like Klonopin could. I could take quite a few drinks on Klonopin, and if anything, it would just balance me out from being too overly talkative to being moderately over-talkative while on alcohol. (Klonopin alone= no drive to talk even when you want to, which can be good unless you are at a party).

So I'm suprised... I think Xanax and Nardil aren't a good mix. Klonopin seems to have fewer interactions for me. I've never tried Nardil.

Have you tried the once a day Xanax XR? I actually take 1mg morning and 1mg at bedtime, my docs suggestion because it really only has an 8-15 hour half life. It's been great compared to regular Xanax, smooth sailing, no ups and downs.

Ace,
Did Nardil help the OCD? I haven't tried it yet, but I'm in the market (again) for a new OCD med.

Elle,

Withoubt a doubt it did...but only to 50-60%...Zyprexa is great for OCD....but Nardil rocks my world for So many disorders....

I would give the SSRIs a miss, from what I have read...try Tramadol first or Anafranil, or the brilliant Nardil....I have a few clinical reports demonstrating unequivocal therapeutic efficacy of Nardil in OCD...give it a go...

Please ask any more qstns!

Ace.

I second your opinion regarding Xanax vs. Klonopin. In my experience, Xanax is best only for PRN use, e.g. panic attacks. Klonopin is WAY more beneficial in OCD and social phobia. It's also the only benzo I think should be considered first-line for use on an outpatient basis.

I agree you should check into the Xanax XR. I was taking the 2mg XR for awhile... it's much smoother than the normal tabs. As far as strength-wise compared to Klonopin(also took Klonopin in the past at 2mg/day). The Xanax was stronger and better feeling for me for the first week than the Klonopin. But after the first week the effects faded. Whereas with Klonopin I didn't develope any tolerance. I'd also add that I was more social on Xanax than Klonopin. But overall, I'd have to agree with everyone else that Klonopin would be more suitable for long-term every day use. By all means though if you can try the XR form of Xanax and it continues to work for you with the same efficacy as what it started with then that's great.

I find that xanax blows away most of the confusion I usually have in my head. I find it also mood-enhancing. It helps also with concentration I think, I don't know if this can mean that I have trouble with concentration because I'm anxious about concentrating. I think it helps also with my prostatis that maybe is stress-related or has something to do with muscle's tensions. After ten years of antidepressants trials I just can't stand the idea that xanax is a solution for my problems. I would feel cheated if it were so.

I can also fail to understand the difference between the addiction to benzos and what happens with antidepressants. If you try to stop an antidepressant you're likely to suffer a lot, and the same happens with benzo (or so they say). So, what's the difference ? Is it just a linguistic issue ? The more I experiments with this stuff the more I understand the psychiatrists are shooting in the dark ... this really scares me, I don't like to be the doctor of myself.

My doc prescribed Xanax XR to me one dose morning and one dose bedtime instead of just one morning dose. It makes since because the half life is really only about 12-15 hours. I take it twice daily, 7:00am and 7:00pm. I talked to a pharmacist from Pharmacia and she said even though it's advertised "once daily" it's not uncommon to divide doses, not the tablets, doses.

Xanax is a great med, but I sure did develop tolerance suddenly. This didn't cause me any problems -- I just use it sparingly -- but Klonopin (clonazepam) continues to work at the same dose I started with, and seems less problematic for regular use (for me at least).

Xanax works extremely well for me PRN, though; I'm just cautious with it.
