Hi,

Manerix has a reputation as being an extremely poor AD drug. I'd stop taking it & take the Celexa alone.

Cheers,
Panda.

Although it's an MAOI, if your doc says that it is being combined with celexa, I wouldn't worry about it.

But why does your doc want you to stay on manerix if it isn't working?

If I do consider combining them, I am worried about seritonin symdrome. I am running out of option of meds to try, so combining manerix with celexa is a direction to go in. My pdoc said they have had some good respones to this combo, but I can not find any literature on this combination.I gave celexa a good trial on its own and alone with risperidone. With the risperidone in the mix I did have a good response for about a month than it stopped working. In the early nineties manerix worked well for me for about two years.

The neurobiological basis for social anxiety disorder remains to be completely elucidated, although the dopamine system is known to be involved.Like many illnesses, a genetic element is involved; SAD being more common in relatives than in the general population. Environmental factors may contribute to social anxiety disorder.

The Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors are known to be efficacious in treating this disorder. Manerix is a Monoamine Oxidase-A inhibitor, MAO-A being preferentially responsible for degradation of Serotonin & Norepinephrine in brain neurons. On its own, Manerix use does not warrant the diet restrictions of the older non-selective MAOI's Although the serotonin syndrome is a possibility in combination with Celexa, it depends on the dose of each.

Manerix, will probably, initially, make one feel abit more on edge and nervous than normal, but as time goes by, receptor density will adjust and one will start to feel a change.

However, in my experience, I have found that doperminergic antidepresants do a much better job. And it is also prude to initialize therapy with a low dose of beta blockers [propranolol] for at least 2 weeks. This helps greatly with the somatic symptoms of SAD like hand shaking.

If it were up to me I would keep the Manerix at 150 mg twice daily. Add one Wellbutrin 150 mg instead of Celexa and also add propranolol @ 10 mg twice daily for at least 2 weeks.

Learning to cope with and even enjoy social situations is partly a matter of practice, and some people may not receive this kind of practice when growing up. So, as with other anxiety disorders, nature and nurture may intertwine to bring about symptoms of social anxiety disorder.

p.s. BEAR IN MIND THAT YOUR DOCTOR KNOW BEST, AND NO TREATMENT SHOULD BE INITIATED WITHOUT HIS CONSULTATION.

I would be very hesitant to combine an SSRI with a RIMA, and celexa would be my last choice for fear of serotonin syndrome.

I tried wellbutrin, and it made my anxiety much worse and caused me to sweat profusely, at a very low dose.I also tried propranolol. This drug increased my anxity so much I had trouble to breath and thought I was going to passout. It is very puzzling to me, that I have had so few meds that actually helped me for a good length of time over the past 15 years?

Thank for your input...

Stann....

I really like manerix for energy. I only needed to take 150 a day and I felt great. But once a month (PMS) the depression was too much and manerix just didn't cut it during that time of the month. Celexa is really good for PMS, but makes me tired. I had asked about taking Celexa just before my period and the Manerix the rest of the month. My Doctor said it would be fine, and then phoned me up in a frenzy saying Don't do it. When I took my prescriptions to the pharmacists, this was before my doctor had phoned me, the pharmacists said I could not take both of them, and that I needed a 2 week wash period before switching to one or the other.

So I would really check into the combo of Manerix and Celexa.

I am on Celexa, and I have started drinking espresso during the day, which gives me great energy and makes me very social, which is weird for me. I can't tolerate coffee, but I can tolerate espresso. One shot of espresso has less caffeine than one cup of coffee. What ever the difference is, it works.

I also take zopiclone to sleep.

Good luck and make sure to "really" do your homework on this.

I am very interested in what you find out, because I believe if there really are no interactions, that combo would be my miracle cure.

Thanks.

I am happy to hear celexa is working for you. Except for the tiredness it give you.I took it at bedtime. I found the increase in serotonin helped me sleep, especially when I took imovane (zopiclone)with it. I have not added celexa to my manerix yet. I am waiting for my pdoc to get back from his month long holiday. He told me a doctor in Ottawa Canada has been using this combo with success.Apparently many drugs that were thought not to be combine with this RMAI can be, because it does not work the same as other MAOI's. I do hope it works because It has been years since I have had any significant long term relief from my anxiety and depression. Interestingly, about nine month ago blood work I had done showed that my testosterone level was extremely low. They started me on t-therapy with Angrogel. It seemed to help with my mood some, but after a few month I had to quite using it because I delvelope peripheral adema. Now they have me on Andriol which again seem to help a little with my mood especially since I had an increase in dose just a week ago.

Take care....Stann

PS, I made the switch from celexa to manerix with no wash out period. It was a very smooth transition.

I am about to start celexa (cipramil/citalopram), i'm on an initial dosage of half a tab for 6 days (10mg) then up to 1 full tab per day (20mg), which from that point i'll be seeing my pdoc.

I just wanted to say that I have recently been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive- personality disorder (I originally was diagnosed with manic depression, then bipolar type II, with what i felt was hypersexuality, rapid cycling, and minimal manic, but more moderate depression).

I have found Moclobemide (aurorix/manerix) to be the best form of help in the past, I used it for 2 years and then actually felt normal again (but i was suffering only 3month sessional depression at that stage) up to 900mg.

I also wanted to say that Moclobemide/Manerix is actually a RIMA, not a MAIO......although it acts in a similar way it isn't the same, and is reversable. The MAIO's aren't reversable.

I am aware that there are precautions in using Celexa with MAIO's, but use with RIMA's (which Manerix is) has yet to be fully studied, although on my Celexa information sheet (with the medication) states that you should wait 1 day after using Celexa after using Moclobemide (which is Manerix).

Hopefully this helps everyone.......
I'd definately like to combine the two as well, and feel that if Celexa on its own doesn't have a good effect as Moclobemide had, i'll question my pdoc to see if I can combine them. Also Tegretol as a mood stabilizer, but we are always told to listen to our pdocs (although we often have to wait sometimes months or years being guinea pigs)

Unfortunately no, I have not found anything to work since 1995.Over the past five years I have tried just about everything available.I felt terrible most all the time. I finally decided to stop taking all my meds and get CBT, which is helping a little, but it is to soon to tell if it will help as much as I would like it too.I Have been off my ADs for about eight months and off the benzodiazepines for about five month. The Valium was the hardest to get off.Now I think I am experiencing protracted withdrawal from the Valium.

Are you having any luck?

Hope all is well...
