Help with A l c o h o l !!!

Posted by JonW on February 1, 2004, at 16:33:23

I'm one of those people who gets all depressed 2 or 3 days after drinking, and it really doesn't matter how much I drink. Anyone else here like that??? More is definitely worse, but any seems to have this effect. My question is, does anyone know of an antidote? I read somewhere that DMAE reduced the depression associated with hangovers... does that mean I could take that to combat the rebound depression I get from drinking??? Has anyone found a workable solution to this problem, other than avoiding alcohol altogether? Thanks for any advice!

Jon :)

You dont want to avoid alcohol to feel better?

Get thee to AA. You are probably an alcoholic like me. You dont need to use alcohol when you have emotional disorders, IMO.

My .02 cents

Thank you for the well-intentioned post and the 2 cents, but I don't have a drinking problem. In fact, I hardly ever drink. I'm a young person and it would be nice not to have to give up drinking entirely, though. I was just curious if anyone knows a way to minimize the impact drinking has for me. I get very depressed two or three days later, even if I only have 1 beer. Just wondered if there's anything that might help. Anyone have any suggestions other than AA???

Dear Jon: It's hard to answer your question without having more information. Are you on any medications right now? Are you currently sufferring from depression or being treated for it?

How often do you drink and how much? Do you have any other health problems?

Helen

Wow, I have never heard of this scenario before, but it's not like I have any clinical experience. :)

If you experience such a rebound depression from drinking, avoid alcohol, unless you consider this rebound depression worth the mediocre buzz that alcohol provides. IMHO, you are playing with fire every time you drink; what if one time that rebound depression sticks around?

Here is my guess: you have a predisposition toward some form of bipolar disorder and/or are hypersensitive to alcohol, which is neurotoxic. You know how it burns when you put it on a cut? Well, when you drink it you put it on all your internal organs! Using anything as an "antidote" to a temporary alcohol-induced depression I imagine could only make things worse.

I suggest that you find another recreational drug that does not produce this effect, preferably a safer one that is not cytotoxic (pharmaceutical opioids--especially a tincutre of opium--_taken orally_ in _moderate_ doses come to mind). Oh, wait, that's "drug abuse", but drinking isn't ... uhh, yeah, that makes sense. Marijuana might be OK on occasion, but it is pro-manic and a gamble for people with mood disorders.

Stay away from other GABA-A agonists, such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines (unless prescribed by a physician) as well as glutaminergic drugs such as ketamine, DXM, and PCP (everyone should stay away from the last two).

Your problem could also be hormonal, metabolic, etc, but I know squat about that. Best to ask your question to a competent psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist; the answer they give you will most likely be to avoid alcohol. It's probably the correct one.

I know you most likely have no interest in most of the drugs I mentioned nor wanted an explanation so verbose, but people often underestimate the deleterious effects of alcohol because it's a legal social institution and the nation's #1 franchise while demonizing other drugs that are, at worst, no more dangerous than alcohol.

P.S. Your antidote could quite possibly be a lot of water (including the famed 8oz per drink) and a nutritious diet rich in tryptophan and low in tyramine.

Sorry JonW:

Sometimes when you have a hammer you look for a nail to strike.

I know that Vitamin B-1 (thiamine) helped me avoid hangovers, but did little to avoid the increase in depressive onset as the result of drinking alcohol.

I hope that helps you.

I have a similar problem -- whether or not I become hungover, alcohol always depresses me, usually in a delayed fashion as you described. I firmly believe that this is due to deficits in B-vitamins, vitamin C, and potassium after drinking. A high dose of B-vitamin complex, several grams of vitamin C, and either a K-Dur or a bunch of bananas for the potassium always seems to do the trick for me.

What is a K-Dur? How much B-vitamin complex do you take? How many grams of vitamin C? Would you say that this works for you consistently? Thanks for your help!

Ame Sans Vie is correct. I recently started taking Vitamin B and C BEFORE i go out drinking, and WOW... I feel 50% better the next day than I usually do. It really helps. I also get really depressed and anxious after drinking.

What does IMO stand for???

IMO means...

IMO means "In my opinion" (IMHO means "In my humble opinion").

Funny how this Internet slang becomes mainstream. For example, it took me a while to figure out what "ROTFLMAO" means (doesn't get used much on this forum...).

Just a reminder not to use language that could offend others, thanks. One reason to stick to acronyms? :-)

I'm assuming the usage of the acronym for the phrase "for unlawful carnal knowledge" doesn't fall under the rule of "one reason to stick to acronyms"?!

Sorry. Couldn't resist. The etymology may be an "urban legend" but that doesn't invalidate it...
