Posted by lettie on February 3, 2001, at 9:56:06

Does anyone know if its safe to take Kava Kava and
Prozac together? I read an interesting article
about weight loss and Kava Kava. I'd like to try it
but I'm new on Prozac and don't know whats Ok yet!
Thanks

Hi,
I think I read the same article. I started taking kavakava along with my other meds a few days ago and one is an ssri but not Prozac. Anyhow, I have been sleeping better and don't see any adverse effects besides a little tiredness right now. I think some might advise against it saying it could lead to serotonin syndrome. You might want to call your pharmacist and ask. My pharmacist advised against it but it hasn't harmed me so far. But I hope I don't wake up dead. :-) I'm on low doses of everything so I figure I won't worry. There are pharmaceutical tips listed here and the link to it is at the bottom of the page. I've taken kavakava before, too, and it never harmed me when combined with my meds. If I were you I'd gather up lots of info. on it, including professionals, and then make up your mind. If you decide to take it there are symptoms to look for in Serotonin Syndrome-one is extreme sedation and another is a drunkenness-like state. Like I said,I take low doses of meds. so that's why I don't worry about myself but I don't know what allyou take and how much and how it would effect you. Plus we all have different chemistrys. Weigh it out well is all I can add. I hope this will help some. Pat

I take both. I use the ground root and prepare in the traditional Fiji way. Very faintly relaxing and stimulating, if that's possible. No big deal though. The weight loss does seem to happen. Kava is a strong diuretic so the weight that comes off is probably water.

Kava and Prozac have different mechanisms of action -- Prozac works on the serotonin system, and Kava seems to work either on the GABA or dopaminergic systems. Theoretically, they should be safe to use together...I personally use Effexor XR and Kava together with no ill effects.
