Can you take Effexor Wellbutrin together?

Posted by LizB on February 2, 2004, at 8:34:02

Has anyone ever taken both at the same time? If starting one, should you taper off slowly with the other one? Thanks! Need spring soon....too many gray, gloomy days!

It's a good combination. If you are taking them in combination, as a lot of people do, then you keep taking both at the same time indefinitely.

Thanks so much! Do you know of anyone who has done this and the results? And, the dosage? I'm going thru a terrible divorce and felt that the Effexor needed a little boost. I'm not fond of medications and love to do things naturally, but feel so overwhelmed right now.

I take 75mg of Effexor daily for depression and 37.5mg daily of Wellbutrin (I use a pill splitter) for the sexual side effects of Effexor. Works great for me. I find Wellbutrin by itself makes me too irritable.

Thanks for the input. I just wondered if the combo of the two made a difference.

Poohbear's experience is typical. When people take Wellbutrin by itself, it oftentimes causes jitteriness (but not always). In most cases, Wellbutrin is taken at the same time as another antidepressant.

Thanks for your comments. I'm thinking that my 150mg Wellbutrin and 75mg Effexor might be good. Does anyone ever take the 150mg Effexor? Is it based on body weight?

No...

It's based on what doseage works best to give you relief of your symptoms. My doctor had me work up to 225mg, but found that I was having too many side effects; in other words being over-dosed. We worked it back down to 75mg. Turns out my system is very sensitive to meds. Has nothing to do with weight, as I'm a 205 lb. male.

You need to be very aware of whats going on with your body, what the common side effects are, how you feel before you start and how your feels change as you increase the doseage.

Take good notes and work closely with your doctor for best results. No question is stupid and no observation is unimportant if it's important to you. For example, don't be embarassed to tell your doc that you're having to urinate frequently and also that it's more difficult to urinate. (this happened to me.)

Your doctor won't know what's going on if you don't tell him or her.

Best wishes!

Tony

Start low and go slow. If you can get by with a very low dose of Wellbutrin, that would be good when combining with Effexor. The combo can significantly increase norepinephrine (and serotonin), which can lead to increased irritability and mood swings. Effexor can be hard to stop, also, especially at higher dosages. Seems advisable to try the combo at the lowest possible levels, hoping for improved mood and concentration and few side effects.

Best,
interject

Thanks, Tony. I appreciate all the info. It's nice to hear from people who have taken it andnot someone who just prescribes it!

Just trying to get an answer, my husband is on Wellbutrin, trying to get off the Effexor, its side effects are not good for him, but getting off totally is really hard, he gets a weird spacy feeling if he doesn't take the Effexor, any ideas? thanks

This combo is working well for me. I take 300 mg Wellbutrin XL in the AM and 75 mg Effexor XR before bedtime. Took care of the aggitatation that I was experiencing on WB alone and takes care of the sleepiness I get after taking Effexor.
