I had some problems with lamictal giving me too much energy, racing thoughts, sort of hypomanic and found myself crashing after a few hours. MY Dr. suggested Xanax XR as alternative to lamictal for anxiety and depression since the lamictal was causing these other symptoms. The X XR works ok but I start crashing at night after the xanax is wearing off. I'm thinking of a very small dose of lamicital of few times a day (12.5mg) 2x a day and taking the xanax xr 2x a day to ward off the crash. Just would like opinions. I need to address the anxiety and depression and I love the boost lamictal gives me but hate the inevitable crash. Anyone else tried this combo?

Hello, I have been taking xanax xr 2 mg daily for over a year. I also take effexor. Just about a week ago, my pdoc added 25mg of lamictal- I really dont feel that energy you described. But maybe thats because of the xanax in my system. Also, if you are depressed you may need to add some kind of AD drug to your combo, because the xanax can actually bring you down (mentally) even though its great with the anxiety

Unfortunately for me all antidepressants (SSRI especially) make me manic. I've also took Nardil an MAOI some years ago and took it for about 4 years but it had lots of side effects including weight gain and mania although i did not realize at the time that I was manic (hypomanic really).
My dr. tried the lamictal for depression along with klonopin but alone the lamictal made me hypomanic too. I am so tired of trying to find the right mix of meds for me. I am 47 and it's getting old.

thanks for the input. I know how frustrating it can be. Im 31 and wonder if i will always be searching for the right meds.
