migraines ADs

Posted by Lyrical13 on January 17, 2004, at 6:56:12

I have read that ADs are now being used to treat migraines. Anyone know which ones are commonly tried? Anyone had any success with this? My husband has chronic migraines. I think his sleep apnea and diabetes probably also contribute to this problem. But I'm wondering if an AD could help. The other thing is, he is depressed...he brushed it off as "only situational". Regardless of whether it is "situational" (unemployed off and on for 4 years), it is still affecting his functioning and our relationship. Short-term ADs and/or counseling could help. Thought if he found an AD that worked for migraines, could have the additional benefit of lifting his mood.

Antidepresants for pain: I believe Amitriptyline & some of it's TCA relatives can be used to treat migraines & various other pain problems like back pain & IBS. I've also read somewhere Efexor can too.

I can sympathize with your husband being in & out of work for 4 years, I am in the same situation. I thought I was "situational" too until I started thinking about suicide as a solution to some very trivial problems, it's then I decided to get myself some help.

Cheers,
Panda.

My neurologists prescribed me Inderol(sp?) and Prozac for migraine preventatives.
Inderol is actually a high blood pressure med I think, but your blood vessels constricting too much can cause migraines. Neurologist also prescribed low dose of prozac because he says depression and migraines go hand in hand. They are not sure which comes first, migraine and it causes depression (understandably), or depression, which causes the migraine.

Either way, it helps prevent a lot of my migraines. My daughter was prescribed Depakote to prevent hers. She was on another medicine which I can't remember the name of, but her babysitter called and said she was a tirant, and we noticed it too, so i called the neurologist and asked if some meds may cause extreme anger, and he said yes, so he switched her to depakote.

Good luck. Oh, I take Royal Jelly pills, which helps my migrianes more than anything ever has.

What are Royal Jelly pills? (nm)
