my pdoc told me to take klonopin at night as needed so that i could sleep and that it was supposed to stay in my system for twenty four hours...however...i still feel social anxiety the next day....so i was wondering if it was alright to take it during the day or if it would end up making me look like a zombie...i ask becasue spring semester starts tommorow and i am and will be very anxious about that but i don't think that taking it tonight will be enough to ease me up...any help would be great...

I've taken anywhere from .5 mg to 1 mg of Klonopin during the day and no ill effects. When I first started I did feel groggy but that wore after taking it for a few weeks. Try a small dose like .25 mg and see how it goes.

My pdoc told me I could take it every 4 hours if I needed too. The effect definitely wears off.Ilene

When I started Klonopin, my pdoc recommended taking 1 mg before bed. It worked, but the anti-anxiety effects wore off by about noon the next day. So, I tried taking 1/4 mg 4X a day for a few days, and that was OK, although it made me a bit drowsy. Then I went to 1/2 mg 2X a day and that helped more with the anxiety. The sleepiness disappeared in a couple of weeks and I started taking 1 mg in the AM with no side effects at all.
When I told my pdoc about this he said "Oh -- you're doing West Coast dosing". I had no idea what he meant, but he explained that psychiatrists in the east generally prefer that patients take Klonopin at night and ones in the west prefer daytime dosing, often divided through the day. He just told me to do whatever works best, and "West Coast" is best for me.
The initial divided-dose strategy seemed to keep startup side effects to a minimum. They really did go away quickly, but the anxiety relief has remained.
