In reply to klonopin during the day?, posted by starsky on January 19, 2004, at 8:41:11
When I started Klonopin, my pdoc recommended taking 1 mg before bed. It worked, but the anti-anxiety effects wore off by about noon the next day. So, I tried taking 1/4 mg 4X a day for a few days, and that was OK, although it made me a bit drowsy. Then I went to 1/2 mg 2X a day and that helped more with the anxiety. The sleepiness disappeared in a couple of weeks and I started taking 1 mg in the AM with no side effects at all.
When I told my pdoc about this he said "Oh -- you're doing West Coast dosing". I had no idea what he meant, but he explained that psychiatrists in the east generally prefer that patients take Klonopin at night and ones in the west prefer daytime dosing, often divided through the day. He just told me to do whatever works best, and "West Coast" is best for me.
The initial divided-dose strategy seemed to keep startup side effects to a minimum. They really did go away quickly, but the anxiety relief has remained.
