Severely underweight -- suggestions?

Posted by billym on December 28, 2003, at 10:28:22

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to gain body fat? I am underweight and I have about 3% body fat. This is due to a multitude of problems, from high metabolism to recovery from leukemia, so if anyone can help that would be appreciated. My doctors don't have much advice, though they put me on Remeron and it's helping with appetite.

I'm 5'10" and weigh 129. I'm trying to eat a lot, and I think I'm gaining, but I always get discouraged when I do this. What will put on fat quickly? What about drinking olive oil?

I would suggest seeing a nutrionist.

But hey if you are looking for a med that will make you eat and sleep and help you with depression try Zyprexa.

I guess you need to be patient. The weight will come back eventually. You could also drink Ensure Plus in between meals.

Uh, I would say skip the olive oil!

Be good to yourself. You survived Leukemia!!! That's something to be thankful for!

ditto what Maxime said. I am taking 2.5mg of Zyprexa a day for a little over a month, and have put on 8 pounds! I needed to put on weight tho, so it doesn't bother me. I lose pleasure in eating when depressed, it all tastes "blah", even my favorite foods. The Ensure Plus is a good idea too, easy to chug if/when you don't have an appetite. I use that when depressed to survive. When i was on street drugs i used ensure too, as i would puke up food when using heroin ('specially when i added cocaine to the mix).

Congrats on kicking the leukemia's ass!

my best advice to you would be to eat all through out the day, and eat alot of carbs. i am your hieght and a 2 years ago i weighed the same as you, but b/c of medication taking away my appetite. different reasons, but i couldn't seem to gain weight. i talked to a nutritionist and they said to eat every 3 hours, but you have to really be aware of the time so you do eat and not forget. and she said to eat those protien bars, added to a regular diet they are suppose to pack on pounds. i gained weight. good luck

I agree--Zyprexa is the heavyweight champion of the world when it comes to gaining weight, but your doctor may not give it just for that. Second best is an antihistamine called periactin(chloroheptidine)Sp.? It will make you as hungry as a horse. I tried to gain weight for years and I know what it's like. Good luck!

Zyprexa is the answer.

There are a lot of anti-psychotics that will help you gain weight. Zyprexa is the one that comes to mind, I think another poster mentioned this too. They really do make you hungry.

I had your problem for decades. Either Zyprexa or Periactin will do the trick.
