Selegiline for Social Anxiety / Depression / ADD?

Posted by mrgeek on December 21, 2003, at 19:50:36

Just wondering if anyone has tried Selegiline for depression, ahh, or anxiety (specifically social anxiety). I suspect that my problems are related to dopamine and I understand that Selegiline is a MAO-B inhibitor which affects primarily dopamine. Anyone have any experience with it? Thanks.

Hmmm... I asked the same question to my doc some days ago. But he said this has been tested zillion of times before without sucess. Also, I can not find any positive studies at pubmed regarding anxiety or depression. But on the other had I wonder if it could work for *me* anyway, because I failed on so much other drugs before...
I'd love to hear from some sucess stories.

I have been doing a bit of research at my college library's online database and I have actually found one study which claim the effectiveness of Selegiline in depression. I'll just post the names and abstract...if anyone is interested in reading the full study just let me know.

1. Transdermal selegiline in major depression: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study in outpatients

Abstract: The authors investigated the efficacy and safety of transdermal selegiline in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder. Transdermal selegiline administered for 6 weeks was an effective and well-tolerated treatment for adult outpatients with major depression. The typical side effects commonly seen with traditional monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants were not observed.

If I come across anymore info I'll be sure to post it.

Helpful for me at 10 mg. Not all I could want from it, but definitely helpful and with no side effects except it's stimulating and I need to counteract that.

Hi. I don't have ADD, so I can't tell you anything about that. Selegiline metabolizes to amphetamine. It does not kill anxiety - at least not from a physical point. It can zip you up a bit. But I have found it to help mood and to help me up from states of sluggish, unmotivated depression.

I swear the stuff kept me out of the hospital one awful day - about an hour after I took a dose I suddenly regained the ability to get up, take a shower, and creep out of the house. I thought it was impossible but my pdoc said that yes, I could act that fast. Freaky. Of course if I'm off it for a couple of days, I can slip back.

It may not be one-stop shopping for depression and anxiety, but if you have something to help with anxiety, then you might want to try out a low dose and see what you think. If I'm in a state where I'm experiencing a lot of anxiety (I do have anxiety problems), then I have to use something else to help with that. Keppra offset the stimulating aspects, but I didn’t like Keppra on the whole. A benzo might do the trick.

I hope that wasn't confusing. Good luck.

Emme
