HELP! Need info on Celexa and OCD fast!

Posted by Janelle on November 26, 2003, at 13:21:04

My pdoc has told me that I am on a high enough dose of Celexa (40mg/day) to control obsessive, ruminating thoughts. I tried a few internet searches and all I could come up with were online places to buy Celexa!

Does anyone here know if what my pdoc says is true? I have not had any relief whatsoever from my OCD tendencies while on 40 mg of Celexa and I want to lower that dose and add in some Luvox, which is targeted (at least that's what they say) specifically to OCD. Pdoc is against it. HELP! I want to convince pdoc to let me try Luvox with less Celexa (if I kept the Celexa dose and added Luvox I'd get Serotonin Syndrome, which happened before, like a year ago when I was on Effexor and a different pdoc - a dumb one(!) added in Luvox. We had to lower the Effexor dose ASAP.

Anyway, Does Celexa help with OCD is my question ??? Thanks to whoever can answer.

Why don't you just switch to luvox?

My pdoc "won't let me" !! She says I'm at a high enough dose of the darn Celexa that it should work for OCD. Well, I can't find a THING on the Net to support this. So, the next appointment I will try my best to convince her, by telling her of my searches, etc. that I should lower the Celexa and add in some Luvox. I hope this answers your question.

Celexa needs to be 60-80mg to help control OCD. One SSRI will work just as well as another in terms of OCD.

Good luck!

Janelle, I don't think there's anything specific about Luvox for OCD. It was approved for it because the manufacturer went for FDA approval of it, rather than depression, probably thinking the market was saturated with antidepressants.

Each of the SSRI's has a slightly different effect, and it's possible that Luvox might work better with some people for OCD, but by no means certain. The thing that works is the SSRI effect, and they all have those. I do think Luvox is one of the least activating SSRI's, if I'm correct, and that's why I liked it.

Do you have a therapist? My understanding is that the best results on OCD are obtained with a combination of SSRI and CBT therapy, or anafranil and CBT therapy. Once I calmed down a bit with the SSRI, the CBT did more to help my OCD than did anything.

Are there enough intials spread through there? :))

I think that your best course of action at this point is to raise the dose of Celexa to 60 mg. That's the dose I was on for a couple years and it worked very well.

Not necessarily. Any SSRI can fail. A silly pdoc said to me once when I was on 200mg Zoloft- you won't get a better response from any other drug at that dose. He spoke nonsense because Nardil helps my OCD much better that Zoloft ever did. Also, Zyprexa killed one part of my oCD.

I have not had any relief whatsoever from my OCD tendencies while on 40 mg of Celexa

If you have been on it a while, throw it away.

and I want to lower that dose and add in some Luvox,

I would only augment If you were getting some benefit from the Celexa.

Luvox seems to be the best SSRI geared toward OCD- I'm not an SSRI fan but I have notice good responses from Luvox.

which is targeted (at least that's what they say) specifically to OCD.

Maybe quit Celexa and start Luvox.

Not for you it seems. I would start Luvox and then add a low dose of an atypical antipsychotic- if this is plausible. You shouldn't have to convince your doc- it is your body and it is obvious you have done research.

Also, how about Tramadol? I have heard some outstanding OCD responses on this.

What about Anafranil too?

Good luck whatever happens!

She says I'm at a high enough dose of the darn Celexa that it should work for OCD.

There is absolutely no conclusive reason "it should work". She doesn't know the aetiology of your OCD symptoms- she can only guess like all of us.

Obviously the Celexa, even though she says it "should work", is NOT working. So she is being silly, IMO.

BTW, she might be looking for some big kick backs from Celexa's manafacturer (whichever company it is)!

I must say I tried prozac and lexapro and few others and they had no effect on OCD.

Luvox seems to give me some relief from OCD.
I think Luvox should be everybody first choice.
Luvox has ZERO SIDE EFFECTS!!!!!!!!!!
oh yeah except one you cant ejaculate.
Dont even try it is impossible.
