Hi All,
In the past my pdoc has talked about MAOI's and I balked because of the dietary restrictions. We're trying a low dose of selegiline at the moment, and 5 mg pushed me into a mixed state which we're trying to control with Keppra. So maybe MAOI's wouldn't be for me anyway. But I digress.
I'm a vegetarian, so I figured it would be really hard to avoid some of the foods such as aged cheeses and soy sauce. But I'm starting to wonder if I was being too rigid about not trying Parnate or Nardil. Can anyone post something about the current knowledge of the MAOI diet.
Any vegetarians out there taking one?
Could I eat yogurt, bananas, raisins and other dried fruits? Soy milk? Tofu? Tempeh? Rice milk? Almond milk? Goat cheese? Are fava beans the only legumes excluded? I've seen some people say they were okay eating the mozzarella on typical pizza...?
Thanks,
Emme

> Emme - No problem with anything you listed except the Tempeh, which has too much fermentation. Im sure you are already making sure your fruits and veggies are fresh and Fava beans are the only restricted legumes. Just make sure the cheeses arent specially aged and you will be fine. Ive had pizza with mozzarella and i have also had parm and romano, jack and colby with no problems. Even provolone is fine as long as you ask and make sure it isnt specially aged. As with anything, caution is called for. If you want to try something, have one or two bites and you will know almost immediately if it is not okay because you will just not feel right. So enjoy, with care! Melodie

soy milk is okay
tofu DEPENDS
tempeh never heard of it
rice milk, almond milk, never heard of it :)
goat cheese i would check vh.org they have a good list of tyramine content of cheeses
i think fava beans are the only legumes excludedi had lots of different pizza and didn't have a problem.... as long as there is no fava bean, draft beer, cavier, or marmite topping :)
