Patient control over choice of meds

Posted by Kira on September 4, 2003, at 14:00:35

I've been contemplating taking Zoloft for the depressive episodes - and staying away from mood stabilizers, but am wondering if a doctor will "force me" to take or refuse to give me certain meds. How much control does the patient have in choosing the type of medication/treatment for bipolar?

It depends on the doctor.

If I suggest something that my pdoc things is reasonable he will let me do it. For instance, I'm going to try to reduce my meds and he let me choose the order to reduce them (even though the order he would have chosen was different).

Based on other things I see on this board, there are other pdocs who would not be interested in your ideas.

My doc gives me some choice, if he likes the idea, sure, if not we talk till we get a solution.

It took me years to get this in my mind: The doctor is a consultant. I am the one who has to live with my illness and no one knows me as well as myself. If I have read something that sounds like something I want to try and other things have not worked--by george you better have a dang good reason for telling me NO. If you won't work with me, I won't work with you! YES--by all means -- it is a collaboration. And your wishes are very very important!

I think that as long as you're not a danger to yourself or others and are aware of the potential consequence of what you are doing, at least in Canada, they can't force you to take things without a court order ... and those are quite difficult to get.
