medication induced hypomania

Posted by lxgina on August 19, 2003, at 12:12:37

I was depressed. Went to family doc, got on Effexor, helped a little but not enough. Went to Pdoc -added Wellbutrin, helped a little - upped the doses on both meds at the same time. Got Hypomanic. Quit Wellbutrin, mania disappeared. How does 1 episode of mania in my life, induced by medication make me bipolar? If I took a med that made me paranoid and hallucinate, does that mean I am schitzophrenic? No. I'm just confused. Never was MANIC EVER in my life until I took Wellbutrin. Now I am labeled Bipolar II and taking hard core stuff that I feel is to harsh on me. I am depressed not MANIC. Help is appreaciated. I know you are not doctors, just looking for your experience/opinions/knowledge.
Thanks in advance.

Just go to another doc and try to explain your story again. Some doctors just follow the protocol, and other doctors know how the drugs work.

Drugs that raise Norepinephrine and Dopamine such as Effexor, and Wellbutrin are very stimulating for some people, expeccial when the depression is more about sad thoughts and not so much about decreased energy.

You should go to another doc and request an SSRI to try instead, or perhaps a higher dose of effexor.

Good Luck

>>>>>>>>>> Again, if I were you, in THIS case, I wouldn't take the hard-core bipolar stuff and would not accept the bipolar diagnosis. I have a brother who one doc said was bipolar. My brother is NOT bipolar....good thing he went to another doc and got put on an Anti-dep, which worked fine. Doctors are sooooooo often wrong.

I am depressed not MANIC. Help is appreaciated.

lxgina,

I made the switch from EffexorXR to WellbutrinSR when a well meaning psychiatrist wanted to help me remain stable from Major Depressive Disorder and to remain able to acheive orgasm. My complaint was that I was unable to have an orgasm (I'm male) on the EffexorXR. It did alleviate my depression.

Well, as I went off of the EffexorXR and he introduced WellbutrinSR I went bonkers. Thoughts just kept coming up in my mind and would not go away. I felt high. I felt very goofy and strange. I called him immediately and he saw me that night.

He came to the conclusion that I had MDD with OCD tendancies. He explained that I would always need an SSRI to accompany any med. He chose Celexa since, at that time, the reported sexual side effects were minimal. The Celexa did the trick!

Wellbutrin is in a class all unto itself. I would definitely seek another psychiatrist's opinion before starting any of the bipolar medications. Some of them have very difficult side-effects, especially if you are not really bipolar.

The current psychiatrist suspected that I might be bipolar so he gave me a book that described manic phases. I did not identify with any of the cases in the book. Therefore he decided that my definitive diagnosis is Major Depressive Disorder.

So, please do yourself a favor and get a second opinion. You may be bipolar. Also it really might be that Wellbutrin is causing the problems and that you should be on something else or have it mixed with another medication.

Blessings,
Simcha
