I have read from another website's postings that prescription drugs inhibit a liver enzyme which slows your metabolism. It recommended that Omega 3 Fish oil and vitamin E taken together helps the liver metabolize and lose weight. Can anyone back this up?? Does anyone know how much and when to take. The article was on the MSMBC website, but I couldn't find it in any searches. Any ideas would be great!! Thanks!

It gets pretty complicated when it comes to what anti depressents are actually doing to enzymes and metabolism, but they mostly target the P450 CYP2D6 enzyme. Which generally increases concentrations of the drug, so that they body doesn't need to keep taking them as much, it works in the way that it inhibits them, just like the way they inhibit different neurotransmitters in the brain..I think they inhibit quit a few different enzymes that slow down metabolism for that very reason that the drugs stay in the system longer, there are what is called inducers which shorten the half life of drugs taken..and there are different ways you can speed up your metabolism and energy levels, fish oil is deffently a good one, and vitamin E, green tea, plenty of fruit, and I've heard that Coconut oil is good too.

Yeah...fruit is really good stuff. Eat plenty of it. I think a good dose of vitamin E is between 400 to 800 IU daily. A good dose of Fish Oil is about 1-3 grams daily. Add all those things together with some Green Tea, Vitamin C, Coconut oil, and you should be feeling a lot better, and they should really help speed your metabolism and energy levels up. Make sure to drink plenty water as well, that's a big factor too, drink at least 8 glasses.

Okay, I have got stocked the only thing I can't find is coconut oil, any suggestions on this, and how much should I take? By the way, green tea is awesome!
I have another question...I was on Prozac for 2 1/2 years but I dropped a ton of weight over the first couple of months and did well for about the first year or so. How do some people gain weight and others lose?? Is is due to increased serotonin levels. Thought I would ask since you are the Prozac Puppet. I just switched over to Lexapro from Prozac almost two weeks ago, prozac lost it effectivness, I had such great success in the beginning. I had started to put on weight, increased anxiety and depression So I guess I will wait and see. Why doesn't anyone talk about Prozac anymore? Thanks for all your advise and help. Are grapes and oranges good too
??

Do a search online, there should be heaps of places to buy coconut oil. This place has really good quality coconut oil:
http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/epco.htm
With the prozac, and weight gain or less, it has a a lot to do serotonin levels for the individual, I believe that when some individuals levels of serotonin rise up very quickly there appetite decreases, and where some peoples serotonin levels take a while to steady out. And there's also the other neurotransmitters that are effected by SSRI's that increase or decrease weight, if you were just dealing with serotonin then at high levels it does decrease appetite, I know this from my time spent on 5-HTP which I lost a hell of a lot of weight on, but it doesnt help out anxiety or ocd much. I would just stay on the medication you are on and boost your energy and metabolism naturally, coconut oil is meant to be really really good stuff, and yeah green tea is also really good stuff....yezh, sure, grapes and oranges are good too.

Thanks a bunch for all your help!! I was thinking of adding 5-HTP, but everyone posted that adding this to Lexapro would be too much serotonin. I am going to try everything you recommeded. Thanks again!

KKA,
I have been wondering about that (SSRIs and weight gain, why do some people gain and others lose and still others stay the same) myself, and I don't think anyone really knows how it works.
I am on Prozac and have been for 2 1/2 years (for OCD) and it didn't affect my weight. Recently I have lost for other reasons and am now rather underweight.

Kat,
I really have been wondering, it is really hard to get a definte answer! I certainly felt like a much happier person on Prozac, and in turn might have ate less, I usually eat while bored or depressed. Once I feel good about myself and feel thin I am more active and feel like going out more etc.
There also is a theory that depressed people don't eat and once they get on SSRI's they feel better and start eating..and gain weight. And then there is the theroy where medications makes the liver metabolize slower, which
would make you gain weight, I have mentioned this in earlier postings.
I am not really sure if anyone really knows, but it is quite confusing!
Take care!!
