Zyprexa = no emotion ?

Posted by cybercafe on July 14, 2003, at 23:38:29

had a housemate on 10 mg zyprexa + other APs, said "zyprexa makes you lazy" ..

i dunno... i sleep excessively ... i can't stand up as long as my friends (just want to sit and veg)...... don't react with excitement or laughter as much as them... ... normal people have more creativity than me ... it seems like normal people are more "bipolar" than i am ! my emotions are very much flat ....
i'm on 5 mg

i guess i'll try reducing to 3.75 mg

(other meds include celexa, ritalin, lorazepam)

but maybe this is ADHD (lack of energy) or ritalin (makes you serious?)

comments??

I'm exactly the same as that on Zyprexa.. I sleep 13 hours a day and still feel so tired and with no energy what so ever. Yet I can never get to sleep at night *sighs*

But, Zyprexa keeps me non-suicidal.. hard to work out whats best.. acheiving nothing and feeling nothing, or feeling suicidal.. I'm sticking with the nothing for now

I've been on zyprexa for 6 years(10 mg) and i am almost completely shut down--no ambitions, no goals, no dreams, no libido, no emotions. I'm seriously considering to stop altogether. I don't know the risks involved but i think it's done more bad than good--in the long run. the only reason i still take it is for the weight gaining properties. I would love to feel something....

I've discovered that taking something to wake you up with the Zyprexa helps. I take 300mg of Wellbutrin SR with 10mg Zyprexa.

Hi Cyber,

I feel sorry for you, but what did you expect exactly from Zyprexa? It is an AP dude! It is not a candy.

Yesterday i was reading 2 very good algorithms for both the treatment of depression and bipolar depression. At the end, they mention the usage of APs as an ultimate and temporary last resort only. In other words, it is far to be a satisfying solution.

Squeeze your doctor in a corner and talk to him. Life AND emotions are good...

Good luck!

Your right I'm not schizophrenic. But, why not an AP? I've not found a drug that works better for me, I fall apart without it. Super anxiety, atleast thats what happened last fall? I could not face reality, it was like shock. Soon as I went back to my regular dose(for the last 5 years) I felt better: No anxiety, could sleep again, thoughts went back to normal. I don't think I can live without it, honistly, advice is good here, anyone. I hate meds, but, AHHHH...

I found that at a low dose of Zyprexa (2.5 to 5)I had no dulling of emotion -quite the opposite. I felt emotionally engaged and became quite active. I started exercising and accomplishing more than I had in a LONG time. However, this is probably due to the amelioration of my depression not necessarily an effect of the Zyprexa. At a higher dose I DID become less active and had some minor dulling.

sounds good... i take ritalin, and it definately helps ... perhaps i'll take a pill while still in bed to see if it will get my butt out of bed any earlier

actually i expected a movement disorder :)
but i didn't get one :(

heh.. really, i thought if schizophrenics could handle 20 - 40 mg, 5 mg shouldn't be too tough

... i dunno... when i took zyprexa + parnate, the MAOI did a good job of keeping me energized ....

i was also thinking.... if my emotions are TOO flat... that means i'm just taking too high a dose.... so the solution is.... take a dose that gives a normal emotional reaction

the only other one i took was depakote and it didn't work + gave me tremors... i hear lithium is the same + polyuria ... zyprexa seems like a good deal to me :)

thanks bro...

How much Ritalin do you take daily? When I was taking 20 mgs of Zyprexa daily, I was also taking 20 mg of Ritalin 6 times a day. This combination worked to keep me up and active very nicely.

Maybe what some others have suggested is to reduce to the 2.5 mg Zyprexa tab -- and maybe increase your Ritalin, if you can stand to do that without getting edgy from it.

Best wishes for a good outcome for you,

hey all,
Just wanted to share my experience.
I am currently taking 20mg of Zyprexa. And 800mg of Lithium, along with 375mg of Effexor XL.

Loads of side effects, but i figure it's much better to have hand tremors and dulled senses, than to be cutting my neck in my depression phase or trying to fly, in my manic phase.
I hope I'm not being shocking, but at the end of the day, these drugs are reserved for people who have no quality of life without them.

May I suggest that if your symptoms do not outweight the side-effects, try some alternative therapies like CBT or DBT for anxiety and/or depression.
Low doses are a good idea too, perhaps 2.5mg of the Zyprexa may help and a moderate-high dose of an AD to give you the "boost" you seem to need.

I hope that you do well, and hope that you don't think I'm saying anything negative, but these drugs ARE nasty and if there is any possible way not to take them, I rekon that should be fully explored. I'm sure you have explored all avenues first... so just disregard what i'm saying!

But my sentiments are: I hope all goes well for you, and just remember- next time you get bummed out by the side-effects, think how awful things can be without the drug. If they are out of kilt... look for an alternative.

Take care
Tay

ritalin SR, i take 40 mg morning 30 mg afternoon..... so that is like 15 mg and 10 mg regular ritalin
actually i'm starting to take 40 mg while in bed, and wake up 2 hours later

ritalin will definately make me psychotic without an AP .... i don't know if i should concentrate more on decreasing the AP OR increasing the AP and increasing the ritalin
