So, in the past year or so, I've come up with some mysterious illnesses - low testosterone and iron deficient anemia along with severe exhaustion, headaches and fatigue. Well, I finally called the gas co. becuase my sister said everytime she came over to my apt. she could smell gas. So they (the gas co.) came over and found out that my oven in my apt. had been leaking a SUBSTANTIAL amount of methane gas. He said "normal" amounts were between 1-100 and the reading he got was 340!!!!! So, due to my landlord's incompetence as fas as checking all gas appliances every year, I've been slowly poisioned since living here - over 2 years!!! I talked to my general doc today about it and she said it could have been causing all of the symptoms I decribed above. I'm SOOOO mad that my landlords have never checked for leaks, etc. So now I wonder how much of my depression, fatigue, etc was caused by the methane leaking into my apt.!!!!!!!
I wonder if that's why I've not responded well to other meds - besides the Nardil. For example -I was, at one time, on 80 mg of Dexedrine (amphetamine) and I would still be so fatigue and exhausted that I'd sleep ALL weeekend as if I were in a coma.
I've thought of legal action - anyone ever have anything similar happen??

Yes this has happened to me before as a student, the landlord was totally dumb, nothing worked!! The worst thing was the oven, it was leaking gas!! We called the gas people for a different issue and they inspected the oven and condemned it on the spot and said we weren't allowed to use it etc. Then we had to go out and buy a new one with OUR money.
So I guess the moral of the story is get carbon monoxide detectors for your house or apt and always get things like ovens and gas fuelled water heaters checked out before you rent or buy some where. Otherwise you could find yourself with a plethora of unexplainable symptoms and eventually lapse into a coma and die.
Least you know the root cause of your problems now Jerry!

Jerry,
I empathize with the problems you have been having, but i think it's very exciting that there could be tangible, fixable cause for all the terrible symptoms you have been experiencing, and that maybe you really don't need any meds at all.
Sometimes s--- just happens, it's how life is. Be grateful this leak was discovered before more detrimental effects happened.
Did the landlords know of the problems you were having? I live in a house with gas heat and fireplace, and i don't have mine routinely checked.
I'm not defending the landlord, it's just that i am in a profession (medical) where people are always looking for someone to blame for all their problems, whether it be the doctors, the nurses, the hospital, etc. It just doesn't occur to so many people that most often, no one is to blame.
I'm sure the landlords have learned something from this experience, and thus you have helped them in dealing with further tenants, etc.
I hope i haven't pissed you off, i'm just trying to help you see what happened to you from a different point of view, that's all.

Thank for the reply. No you havne't pissed me off at all! What I may not hav ementioned in my post was that I called the gas company myself and had it checked - my landlords did nothing - nor have I told them YET. I am going to draft a letter explaining what happened as far as them finind out about the gas leak - at least that way - as you stated above - this will be a learning experience for them.
Thanks again for yoru reply! I appreciate it!

yes, as a matter of fact.
in the 1980's I was living in a house in LA and for some reason, sleeping 13 hours/day. it was awful. then i noticed the strange smell and called the gas company - big gas leak. my sleep returned to normal.

Wow. Let us know if you start to see symptom abatement now that the leak is fixed.

Yup, this happened to me years ago. I was sleeping a ton and I also had a misscariage as well. The over was leaking gas and the hot water heater wasn't vented correctly so all the fumes from that were going into the attic and not out the house. Glad you found out and hope you will be back to normal soon.

If someone wanted the gas company to come out and check for a possible leak, would this be a rather simple procedure? Just wondering how much a precautionary check my cost?
I've got the always-fatigued symptoms, just don't know about the gas leak....(usually, if I lay off the Wendy's chili, my gas won't leak).
Seriously though, is it a simple visit?
This is the end of the thread.
