Has anyone been prescribed seroquel in low doses to help with unipolar depression and anxiety? It is becoming quite the "thing" where I am. Would like to hear about side effects- especially after months of use.

yes, though I should qualify this by saying that i have a strong bipolar component and "overshoot" on antidepressants.
i like seroquel - alot. sadly, i ran into probelms with stiff neck and parkinsons-like symptoms, so i had to quit it. but for about six months there, it was a smooth steady ride. great sleep, no depression, good motivation.
the entire class of atypical antipsychotics are used in treatment resistant depression, so it's not an unusual add-on. but they are not without side effects. i think every person has to balance the severity of the side effects with the benefits they get.

Where are you?
How do you know it is the hot thing?
Are people being prescribed it as monotherapy or as an add on to a serotenergic AD?

> JACKI take 100 mg at night. Helps out a lot with sleep. I have noted some added stability since I started it, particularly the first couple weeks when I started it - but I don't know whether to attribute it to the seroquel, the anafranil, or the effexor finally kicking in.

Hi,
I have been recently and tentatively dxed in the bipolar spectrum. We're doing a mood chart for four weeks and my new pdoc put me on 1/4 of 25mg of Seroquel (6.25) for sleep. it's definitely helping with the sleep, but I feel even more irritable. Maybe my mood is not related to the Seroquel, but it is helping me sleep. I feel I need to take more now tho' over the course of three weeks - like 9mg for sleep. I'm wondering about tolerance with this.

i was on seroquel for a few months..
200 in the pm...
after i took it,20 minutes later,it was like having 10 beer,,sleeping...but if i forced myself and stayed awake through the sedation,,i was fine and relaxed within 1 hour....
no problems getting up in the am...
but it did cause unusaul papitations in the viens in my legs?
and a twitch from time to time

Hi katia, I was in the hospital when my doc discontinued the Seroquel so she was giving me new meds here and there so I didn't notice any insomnia-she actually doped me up pretty good with different meds as trials.
Currently, though, there have been some questions if I am now having some withdrawals-about 2 months later.gal

In my opinion, and I go from experience here. I would choose Seroquel for anxiety only because it helped my anxiety more than any SSRI I have been on. Klonopin, the famous benzo works for my anxiety well also. Unfortunately the side effects from Seroquel over the years took its toll on me personally so I went off with success. As far as depression, I don't really think Seroquel helped me with my depression much at all. Celexa was the only SSRI that worked for me, however, things in my life at that time were going extremely well, I was in a wonderful relationship, I was productive, etc. So, maybe Celexa can't take the cake for the successful absence of my depression during that time (?)
Effexor is a different story. Since that med is also approved for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I experienced that claim first hand. Wonderful for me. I only needed 75mg and I felt great. This was back in 1997. However, it isn't an SSRI.

Hi:
I am taking Seroquel. I started with 25mg went up to about 125mg/day and now back to 25mg/day. I am diagnosed with soft-psychosis (Not a total Schiz). It also made me severely depressed and anxious. The first PDoc prescribed Seroquel. The second PDoc continued but then added Paxil CR(25mg). Both of them said Seroquel is their favorite for sleep, and psychosis. Another researcher/PDoc told me that Seroquel is her favorite also for Sleep, Depression, Anxiety and off course Scizh. It has very low side effects and that is why they would rather start with Seroquel even for moderate anxiety and mild depression. SSRI sucks in terms of side effects. Since, I started taking Paxil (Six months), I can't get it (you know what?) up any more. Though Paxil helped me with depression, I will stop Paxil, as soon as I have a girl friend.

Hi there, I am new here and new to Lamictal and Seroquel. I have experienced chronic depression all of my life and do not respond well to SSRI's or other antidepressants (I get hypomanic). My mother was bipolar and the Dr. thinks I may have bipolarII with main symptom being depression. I started on Lamictal and could not sleep and I am talking about being wide awake all night. It was awful. So, he added 25mg of seroquel. I am sleeping like a baby. I am terrified of constipation (I have irritable bowel syndrome with constipation as predominant problem) and I also DO NOT want to gain any weight. The lamictal is 25mg too. I am very sensitive to medications so I want to keep the doses as low as possible. Did any of you experience constipation and/or weight gain on low doses of these meds??

No, I haven't experienced weight gain on either of these. I take Seroquel periodically for sleep (like 6mg). I'm at 100mg of lam. No depression lift yet.
