I found out that the Seroquel I take for insomnia can have a really negative effect upon thyroid levels - my endocrinologist said it lowers thyroid levels. I actually read about this in a research journal article or something - but can't find it!! ARGH!
Anyone know of this side-effect???

Hi -
I copied this from the medline page on Seroquel:
Other medical problems—
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of quetiapine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
Alzheimer's disease—Quetiapine may cause problems with swallowing, which may increase the chance of pneumonia; also, the chance of seizures may be increased
Breast cancer, or history of or>>>Underactive thyroid—Quetiapine may make these conditions worse
Here's where you can find the whole page:http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/203124.html
Have you had your thyroid checked recently?

Jerry, I copied this from the prescribing info for Seroquel:Hypothyroidism: Clinical trials with SEROQUEL demonstrated a dose-related decrease in total and free thyroxine (T4) of approximately 20% at the higher end of the therapeutic dose range that was evident early on during treatment and maintained without adaptation or progression during more chronic therapy. Generally, these changes were of no clinical significance and TSH was unchanged in most patients, but about 0.4% (10/2386) of SEROQUEL patients did experience TSH increases. Six of the patients with TSH increases needed replacement thyroid treatment.

Oh my gosh, now I find out I'm on TWO meds (Lithium and now Seroquel) that can LOWER thyroid?!!! ACCCK. Thankfully, I'm on a low dose of each, my pdoc has me on Synthroid, and my thyroid came back from being low to being within the "normal" range.
Still, I'm very curious if you know what the dose is that Seroquel starts to possibly lower thyroid?
Thanks.

Janelle, I really don't know. I suppose an occasional person could have that problem on a low dose of Seroquel. I was on Seroquel 25mg bedtime for a little while. The best thing IMO, would be to get your free T3/T4 and TSH levels checked every so often to make sure it isn't happening. (that goes for lithium too) You will just have to do the blood work and get the data. The proof is in the pudding.

I saw my endocrinologist today and he said that Seroquel can "really have powerful effect" upon thyroid levels and even suggessted that I talk to my other doc about finding something else instead of Seroquel.

>Somehow that doesn't surprise me very much. It seems like any NEWER medication has all of the negatives carefully "spun down" and buried, and you only see the true picture after a few years of clinical experience, and THEN the adverse reactions get tallied up. I'm glad you brought up your endo's clinical experience. I was on Risperdal for awhile a few years ago, and I got EPS, then I switched from Risperdal to Seroquel. Don't know if it is coincidence or not, but I stopped the Seroquel (I was getting panic attacks-being off benzos and SSRIs for a few weeks), and within a couple of weeks my GP had found a thyroid tumor. It was just a slight enlargement, but it grew really fast. That is spooky that your endo said that.
This is the end of the thread.
