I'M JUST CURIOUS, SO I'M THROWING A QUESTION OUT THERE FOR ANYONE TO GIVE FEEBACK TO. I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED THIS MYSELF, BUT IS IT POSSIBLE THAT PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS HAVE HIGHER IQ'S? HAS ANY RESEARCH GONE INTO THIS? I HAD MY IQ TESTED MANY YEARS AGO. I'M NO GENIUS BY ANY MEANS, BUT I WAS TOLD MY NUMBER IS ABOVE AVERAGE AT 127. I WAS TOLD THE AVERAGE IQ RANGES FROM 100-111. I'D BE CURIOUS TO GET FEEDBACK ON THIS TO HEAR WHAT PEOPLE THINK. THANKS IN ADVANCE ;) MICHELLE

There is perhaps this link.
Some studies show dramatically accerated
learning capacity in people with Bipolar
(in manic state). I think that if you
have a higher IQ this refelects the structure
and complexity of your brain's neural connections. This could lead to greater preception of emotion as well.I think a more likely explaination is that
people of low intelegence tend to be in lower stress jobs. Ie factory work, repetitive, etc.
We all know that high stress is most likely
the cause/trigger of many peoples illnesses.
But anyone can get depressed,

my doc said bipolars have an iq on average about 6 points higher than most i think.......... mine is about 60 points higher (though sometimes i'm convinced it's higher than that :) )
100 is the average, by definition
i think anorexics also have generally higher iqs, though with all this benzo use i seem to have forgotten the details, sorry :)

Hi everyone,
I'm bipolar with SAD, last year i was tested for IQ, two times, in my "high" state i scored 162!! Then, 2 weeks after, when i felt i was at my "low" state i've tested 92!! What a difference!
You should try this...intresting to see how the test seems to be a lot harder when you are at your "low" state of mind...
Have a good day...

I think this is not true, I have never seen a study to prove it. It makes the people of average
intellengence happy to know there is a hazard to being start. 6 points on an IQ test is w/i the margin for error, so basing anything on 6 points
seems, well, pointless !Also IQ tests don't measure smarts, just the ability to learn. Far too many people with high
IQ function at an average level.

Schizophrenia appears to be relatively more common in those with lower I.Qs and and Bipolar Disorder in those with high I.Qs.However there is a great deal of overlap.Bipolar disorder appears to be less common in those who eat a lot of fatty fish (o.2% in Iceland v 5.5% in Germany).

I've wondered about this myself, though I also have another question to raise. A few years ago, my IQ was tested to be 170. After a year of LSD use, it shot up to 190. Is it possible that LSD could really be the culprit?

No. IQ varies widely throughout life. You can take it on different days and get swings as wide as tens of points. There is also a margin of error of several points. Also equating one
event, an IQ test with another, taking LSD, requires far more supporting evidence to link to 2 together.

Hi,
Wow, I'm so glad with the response. I too have dabbled in LSD. So now we do discuss the chicken and the egg theory? Do the drugs cause us to become "crazy" and smart? LOL
No one can take away our sense our humor. They say the most depressed people are the most jovial. Very famous comedians are among the very depressed.

Ie factory work, repetitive, etc. There was a study done in Britain years back, (I may be wrong re country) but it showed that the lower on the totem pole at work the higher the stress. If I recall correctly the reasoning was because the individuals had less oppurtunity to control their enviorment. The plus side to some of these jobs would be that they involve physical activity.
> But anyone can get depressed,
And if stressed long enough, signs of clinical depression will become evident thus brain chemistry begins to get warped.
Just my opinion.

I have a higher than average IQ (125), and an unusually good long-term memory (it was tested last year.). I also think that I have a better understanding of complicated situations than others do. I enjoy debate and the play of ideas.
I'm not sure if this makes me more prone to mental illness. My (fraternal) twin has the same IQ as I do, and no mental illness. She also places an enormously high value on being conventional and 'normal,'; I don't.
Maybe my mental illness just comes from being aware of the negatives of our culture and how 'unhealthy' normal can be?
(In other words, I'm not "insane," I'm _sane_ surrounded by an _insane_ society!)

i do think iq tests are a load of my hoop, testing people on anything and everything to ascertain what label to slap on them, but yeah there does seem to be some kind of thing going on there, bewtween say high iqs and mental illness.at school the kids who had add seemed to have higher iqs,i know mine came out something like 177,which was great cos instead of them having justification in that i was thick, and thats the reason i coukdnt sit still for their classes,it was the other way round.im sure thats the case with a lotof kids.

Yes, I have had a few docs who thought I could have ADD because of a tendency to 'multitask' when I was in school. (i.e. I would read something interesting while the teacher was talking, read ahead in the book we were reading aloud, etc.)
But I got straight A's, at least in childhood. So I don't think I was 'attention deficit.' I think I was 'interested deficit.' I was not interested in focusing on things that I either already knew, or picked up so quickly I did not need additional reinforcement. The classes I was the most interested in were by far the most challenging.

yeah same here, its a tricky one, hard for others to say.i would definitely recommend its something you feel passionate about, that way it will intrigue you more and hold your attention for longer.a lot of people i think tend to choose jobs below their skill level, just because its there and available,i find myself flitting from job to job,but theres a course im really interested in so im going for that.

That would mean that after LSD you were more "intellegent" than Galileo, da Vinci, and Kant. Taking the Flynn Effect into account (which, as a genius, you will already know about) you were more intellegent than Leibnitz (the man who invented Calculus for fun) and Newton (the man who invented Calculus independently of Leibnitz in order to prove the laws of Physics). Congratulations, because even *before* LSD, you left Descartes in the dust.

The sarcasm in the above post was unkind and uncalled for. Right now, I'm bitter for being faced with a choice of either being too sick from medication or too sick from my illness to enjoy a life that has the capacity to be wonderful. I'm feeling hopeless and worthless. I came to this board in a grumpy mood and took it out on Ame Sans Vie, who, from the above posts, seems like a kind and decent human being. I have always felt inadequate for my mediocre I.Q., and I suppose there was some jealousy at work in my sardonic reaction to her post. Ame Sans Vie, please accept my apologies for my passive-aggressive attitude, and my implications that you were lying in your post. No one deserves that manner of treatment, and I need to work at being a better person regardless of how crummy I feel. I also apologize to the group.

I am sorry I wasn't trying to hurt you. I said it in jest not out of spite or hateful intentions. I know where you stand right now as I am in the same place. Last week I had 3 horrible nights and had to go on a med that makes me zoned out, but affords me some sleep. I have had up and downs for over a year and it sucks. I agree we all deserve better than what we feel right now. Please accept my apology.
