Medicine Headaches (effexor)

Posted by yourshadowself on April 15, 2003, at 12:57:20

I have been taking effexor XR 75mgs for 6 months and it is great! I have weird dreams all the time but i try not to let them disturb me too much.

my problem is that about once a month or every 2 months i get these very intense headaches. THey are in the forehead, temple, behind the eyes region. They last 2 to 3 days and dont respond to normal headache meds. When i get them i also become super-sensitive to light sound and smells. I feel too aweful to think or be social.

I have read about the brain shivers and i dont think thats what it is. I have never missed a dose.

does anyone else have these "medicine headaches"?

The headache you describe sounds like a migraine. All of your symptoms are classic migraine. Do you also have any nausea or vomiting with these headaches (which can also be part of the loveliness that is migraine)?

There are some wonderful medicines for treating migraine- triptans - that have been on the market since about '94. They're non-narcotic and aren't pain pills at all. They work on the chemistry of the migraine. Very effective for most people. They are, however, very expensive. If you only need one a month or every other month, it's not bad though. A lot of doctors have samples.

If the Effexor is working for you, it would be a shame to have to stop it because of these nasty headaches.

As the ads say, "Check with your doctor!" Migraine is now very treatable.

Whoops! Sorry that message got posted twice. If it's worth anything, I have found Imitrex to be the most effective of the triptans for myself. It's also the first one that was on the market.

One thing that is very useful in treating headaches is keeping a headache diary. This is probably more useful to someone with more frequent headaches than yours, but doctors like to recommend it. When you get a headache, note what you ate that day, how you slept, any stressors, etc. Then look to see if there's a pattern.

Are you familiar with the trigger foods? There are certain foods that are very prone to inducing a migraine. Red wine is a big one. Aged products - meats, cheeses. MSG.

Sadly, a lot of good things are on that list :(
If you're interested, you could find a complete listing online.
