Respirdal side effects

Posted by a_a on March 27, 2003, at 20:21:28

My son is taking Respirdal, but makes him feel terible, almost suiacidal. Should He continue taking it or should he switch to something else? and if so what? Thanks for any reply!

this is one of those questions better suited for your doctor...

I would say try another antipsychotic, and assess the necessity of the antipsychotic if it's prescribed for a non-psychotic condition.

This is very through. His condition is like a mystery. The bottom of all of his troubles could be high anxiety. But has gone untreated for such a long time. It has made him to turn to a lot of other conditions. Kind of like a Conversion. Makes a humming noise when stressed. Leaves his sentences half finished. And a few other indications. I doubt if an antipsychotic medication is the right one for him.

I should mention that unlike his Dr's advice he stopped taking the medication and his nightmares and horrible feeling of suicide all stopped. Now he is a quiet cooperative boy ecpt for the behaviors that I mentioned like the humming noise that seems like coming from a high anxiety. Only when we mention the medication gets mad.

In cases of immediate concern to the day-to-day health of the child, it is perfectly acceptable practice to give the child Klonopin or another benzodiazpine while waiting for the medication to kick in for a few weeks.

Abilify might help, but it can produce anxiety in the first few weeks. Have SSRIs been tried first? If your son cannot sleep because of the anxiety, or is experiencing nightmares, there is a legitimate need for Klonopin while waiting for a med to kick in.

These meds will likely cause nightmares and anxiety in the beginning in an anxious patient, so taking Klonopin for the first month is fine.

Thanks for your reply. I should mention that he was taking Ativan (Lorazepam) with it along with Benadryl, but did not help the suicidal mood. Ofcourse the Lorazepam when used alone had a very calming effect. But he even stopped taking that because he wants to feel like normal people who do not have to take pills. I took him to a Dr. today and got perscription for Paxil. Now I do not know how to convince him to take it. He was very mad with me just for taking him to the Dr.
