I feel better on Remeron than mirtazapine (the generic form of Remeron). Anybody else notice this?

Hi McPac. I'm not on Remeron but may be soon. My pdoc initially suggested it after stopping Paxil 5 months ago. I was concerned about weight but the way I feel now weight would be the least of my problems.
I'm not currently on an AD. I had a akathesia on a 4 week trial of Abilify and stopped that med. I was just curious if you felt the Remeron helped. I would be taking it for depression and anxiety.
Thanks.

Lauran, Remeron works great for my terrible insomnia (low dose, 7.5 mg). Don't know how it will work for your depression and anxiety because everybody's chemistry is so unique. Low-dose Remeron will sedate most folks; higher dose (30-45 mg. and more) will "speed" most folks up (due to the increased norepinephrine (adrenaline) effect. IF YOU TAKE A HIGH DOSE, and it speeds you up too much (I HATED that feeling...too damn jittery, nervous....you may want to try it at a lower dose. At a lower dose it works awesome for many people w/ terrible insomnia but I don't know if a low dose would be enough for your dep/anx. Take care!

I've never done Remeron, but I know for a fact that certain classes of drug don't do well as generic. (Got a lecture from my GP) Even though the drug may seem the same on paper, actual bioavailability can vary widely. It has to do with the manufacturing proccesses and how they differ between companies. Tegretol is a great example of this- the name brand is an excellent drug, but the generic isn't worth the blackboard chalk it appears to be made from. They are effectively two different drugs.
You need to take this up with your doctor. The dose may need to be increased, or the generic may just be junk and you may be better off on the Real Stuff. This is an actual issue, not just you being "mental" ;) . Different generic manufacturers make different acting drug, too, so you need to stay with one brand. Switching generics can be just switching doses, regardles of what the label says.missliz

I take 60 mgs. of Remeron per day - at bedtime. It has worked wonders for my depression and anxiety. Even at 60 mgs. it helps me sleep, but others have had a different experience than this. I was taking Zoloft before. The Zoloft helped with the depression (to a degree) but gave me horrible memory and concentration problems. Remeron has brought me out of my depression and allows me to be mentally sharp. I did gain 20 lbs. that all went on towards the beginning of treatment - but it has remained stable at that. I consider it to be the "lesser of the two evils" (20 lbs. vs. hopelessly depressed).
Word of Caution: The start-up side-effects of Remeron were awful. It made me VERY sleepy (like I COULDN'T stay awake) and dizzy. It took 3 to 4 days before I felt safe to drive. I almost quit it because of this; I'm SO glad I stuck it out!
Good Luck!

McPac,
Do you live in the U.S.? I didn't know a generic was available. My pharmacy has been dispensing Remeron, but my HMO usually requires that the generic be dispensed when available.

Thanks Lynda. I think Remeron is the way my pdoc may go. I don't worry too much about the weight anymore as it is more important for me to feel like living than to die skinny.
Actually I have had a 20 lb weight gain with Paxil 5 months ago and there it stays. I've lost a few pounds after stopping the Paxil. I agree that it is like a new set point for my body. Thanks for your input.

Hi McPac. I sure agree that chemistry is different for each person. I can find as many negative posts about Remeron as I can positive! If I listened to every side effect and bad experience that was posted about each med I'd never find one to take.
My pdoc offered this option once and I think I'm ready to try it now. Thanks and good luck.
