Depressed and Tired on Lexapro

Posted by KRM123 on March 23, 2003, at 20:42:15

I've been on Lexapro for a week now. I am even more depressed, have no energy and want to sleep all the time. I know I should hold out to see if it gets better, but it is so hard. I feel hopeless. Has anyone else struggled with the same side effects? Before the Lexapro I was on Wellbutrin for two weeks but that made me worse than the Lex! I was crying constantly, sleeping, depressed more than ever before. I am wondering if these medications will ever work. I started taking the antidepressants for dysthymia- will anything ever work?!

Don't give up on it yet. It can take about 4 weeks for a full effect. The tiredness gets less
over time. I have been on Lexapro for a long time and I am doing extremely well on it.

Hi Bill.

Did your tiredness go away completely? How long did it take?

Along another thread I asked you how you would compare Celexa versus Lexapro regarding tiredness.

Thanks for any input.

Bill,

How long and how severe was your tiredness? I don't know how much longer I can live like this. I feel absolutely worse than when I wasn't taking anything. I want to give up =(

Yes the tiredness does go away! My first 2-3 weeks were ABSOLUTE HELL with all the side effects. Called in sick at work the whole second week - had flu like symptoms and could NOT function. Slept all nite and then lay on the couch all day and could not motivate.
Thankfully that went away. Now into week 8 and no side effects, all have gone away. But, still have bad days and some good days, just seems more "even", not so much extremes of being angry or depressed.

I hope you started out on a low dose of Lex. and slowly increased it. I'm on my 6th week of Lex. and only take 5 mg. because I'm very sensitive to meds. During the first 4 weeks I took Lex at 9 a.m. but 8-10 hours after taking lex., I would become very restless and anxious. Then during the 5th week, 8-10 hours after taking lex, I was no longer restless or anxious but very very tired. I followed Okpolosi's 3/18 advice and switched taking my lex from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. So now the tiredness hits at 1:00 a.m which is when I use to always wake up in the middle of the night and couldn't go back to sleep. Since switching to taking lex at 4 p.m., I'm now sleeping better during the night and not sleepy during the daytime. Called the Drug mfg and asked then about what could be happening 8-10 hours after taking the lex. and told her about others on the internet mentioning this same tiredness 8-10 hours after taking the pill. She didn't know why we would all be experiencing this. I'm hoping this "side effect" will not go away as I can now sleep during the night.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Today is day 11 on Lex and I actually didn't feel all that depressed. Last night I didn't sleep well which was kinda a good sign since all I've been doing lately is sleeping. I felt tired but better as far as depression goes. My Dr. started me out on 10mg and that's what I've been on. I prob should have started lower. I really just want to be able to exercise again! I went for a walk today but had to make it short cause I felt too tired.

im finding that im getting more tired too on lex - im officially at 2 weeks now on lex.

the side effects arent as bad as they were last week, but im wondering if maybe it was side effects from weaning off of prozac rather than the onset of lex. hard to tell....

my pdoc says that it takes about 4 weeks before it works, so i got two more weeks to go before i can assess if its working. will keep you all posted - as well as myself since i can go back and read what i have been feeling and keep track of whats going on.

peace your way everyone.
