Anxiety attack out of no where

Posted by calaway on February 8, 2003, at 23:05:25

earlier this week I opened a day home, in which two children were attending. It was awful, I suddenly had a huge panic attack, and many minor ones through out the day. I kept crying, could eat and when I forced down some food I threw it back up. It's been 8 years since I had an attack.

In September I switched from Paxil to effexor because my Dr. felt I needed an increased dose, but Paxil packs on the pounds on me. I'm taking 150mg of effexor xr, I think that I have been okay on it. I prefer the Paxil, but felt the effexor was ok.

Could the attack be proof of the effexor not working?. Or maybe taking in these children was mentally just too much.

I have stopped the day home and I feel much better however I am still having slight attacks. I'm off to the Dr's. monday. I really don't want to go back to the Paxil an chance gaining any weight (I'm 40lbs over weight now). Any suggestions on other meds?.

Hi calaway,
I'm so sorry that you have given up the childrens home activity. Although you obviously felt it was the better decision for you. Without meaning to sound patronising, I think it is great that you achieved that enterprise.
I certainly wouldn't want to assume that your anxiety is related to taking the Effexor XL, but when I took this drug I certainly had a level of anxiety which neither existed prior to taking it, or after stopping it. I found my daily life achievements much undermined during this period.
I accept that I may have had enhancement of an existing anxiety level while taking it, but life certainly became more settled when I stopped it.
It did make a degree of improvement in my mood level, but this was so defeated by the anxiety level that it just wasn't worth persevering with.
The reduction period towards withdrawl was grim too.
I accept that many people have a more positive experience while using effexor XL.
Eilidh.
