Well it came! On Saturday weak stomach began, tachycardia (fast heartbeat), diaphoresis (lots of sweating), occipital headache radiating frontally, and nausea.
I took one 20mg nifedipene. Rang Ambulance. Bradycardia (slow heartbeat) in ambulance. On arrival and on way to hospital BP was very, very, high. At hostital, within hour BP went down significantly. After 2 hours BP was very good.
This wasn't much fun. The ambulance people were wonderful.
My question: around 30 mins before I had a hamburger. Could the meat have been old, containing excessive tyramine?
BUT -- throughout day I had been eating a LOT of chocalate Snickers sandwich paste. But a week or 2 prior I had been sculling this stuff -- eating a bottle and a half a day on average! See what Nardil does!
What do you thing was the precursor for my hypertensive crisis?
Do you think I could of stayed home after the Nifedipine? I required no further treatment -- just oxygen mask in ambulance and constant monetering. At hospital they just observed my BP twice.
Let me know what you think. Any qstns answered.
P.S. I would have this happen 50 times over for my dear Nardil!

It does say avoid excessive amounts of chocolate.. Where did you get the hamburger at? Did the doctor have an explanation? I would call you doctor and see if he had an idea... That is a tough one to narrow it down to. It could have been either one I suppose although I would guess the chocolate.
I know how hard it is to not eat so much chocolate, I ate way to much today! I considered it my "bad day" of eating. Try not to do it everyday or you might see the weight come on fast.

All chocolate is not the same. I see you are getting the nardil appetite. I could eat a Hershey bar in about 45 seconds. I thought all chocolate was safe because I could eat one of those giant size bars. But then on a different occaision I ate about 3 Brachs chocolate stars and my BP started going up. It gave me a mild hypertensive crisis. Watch out!!

chocolate Snickers sandwich paste? lol that sounds good.
Just because you had eaten this before doesn't mean that *this* time it wont cause a hypertensive reaction....but I have a feeling it was the hamburger, or a combination of the two.Check the source of the hamburger, and how old the meat was, how long it had been sitting out, OR if it contained a large amount of SOY filler.

If you take nifedipene, you probably shouldn't have to go to the hospital (unless your doctor told you to).
When I was on nardil I bought an inexpensive blood pressure cuff. I only had one hypertensive reaction and it wasn't dangerously high. Having the cuff saved me a few trips to the hospital.
(But if you buy one, don't get obsessed about taking your BP all the time: just when you get that headache with the slow pulse).Shelli

I live on yogurt--not that much of it, but I eat it every morning for breakfast. I have read in some places that it is a no-no on Nardil, but it doesn't seem to be listed consistently or with very much emphasis. Are these foods (sour cream etc., but especially yogurt) considered to be that dangerous while on MAOI'S? I forgot to ask my doctor and will call if I have to, but any input would be appreciated in the meantime. (I'm supposed to be starting Nardil today, but seem to be chickening out until tomorrow...)

I suspect it was the hamburger. The biggest offenders of causing hypertensive crisis are degraded protein. My only h/t crisis as a result of food (the 1st was caused by my pdoc switching me from Nardil to Parnate too quickly) came after 3 or more years on the Parnate and was from eating 1/2 teriyaki chicken breast at a restaurant. For all I know the chicken was sitting in the fridge for 3 or more days and possibly being marinated in soy sauce. This is one of the reasons I stopped 5 years ago, eating out was just too "iffy", you never know how fresh the meat is that you eat, or what they've put in their "sauce".
It would also be wise to not over do the chocolate.
Good Luck

As long as it's fresh, (not past expiration date) and in moderate - not huge amounts - both sour cream and yogurt are just fine. Go with the food lists that were developed after 1996.
You can do it!

MAOI Diet: Pizza & Soy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's) are one class of drugs that are commonly prescribed for social phobia and other psychiatric disorders. Because interactions between tyramine (a chemical found in cheese, soy, etc.) and an MAOI can cause hypertension, patients taking an MAOI must often follow certain dietrary restrictions. In an ongoing attempt to refine the MAOI diet, Dr. Kenneth Shulman recently analyzed tyramine content in a vareity of pizzas and soy products.Using HPLC (high-pressure liquid chromatography), the tyramine content is 33 sample foods was determined: These sample foods contained a selection of cheeses, tofu, tofu-containing products, products that contained soya, and 6 different selections of pizza from large chain outlets. Foods with 6 mg of tyramine or less were considered safe for consumption with an MAOI.
The findings suggest that commercially available pizzas from large chains are safe for consumption with an MAOI. However, it is recommended to be causeious of gourmet pizzas from smaller outlets and any pizzas with aged cheeses added. In addition, all soybean products should be avoided while on an MAOI, especially soy sauce and tofu. Dr. Shulman also states that individual couseling is important for anyone on an MAOI diet.

You have eased my mind. I got panicky today; in that panic I could not live without a Cobb salad. Needless to say, I will start the Nardil tomorrow. I didn't realize I was such a hypochondriac about this--I had every intention of starting today until I began obsessing about the yogurt. Oh dear God, I pray that Nardil will relieve me of the obsession about Nardil!

When I first started the Nardil I stayed anxious about taking it for a few weeks. I would torture myself with the same type of thinking that the Nardil eventually quiets - the "What if's". I would scare myself with thoughts of losing control and purposely putting things in my mouth that I knew would harm me (kinda OCD-ish). However, once the Nardil begins to work and it does quickly, the anxiety stops and you just do what you need to do.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Indeed I did. After the first one I had kind of a headace and a bad taste in my mouth, and a little anxiety, but only because I have been psyching myself out so bad. I was also a little queasy. I finally took part of a Klonopin just so I could shut my mind up enough to start this med already. I just took the other on (I'm starting *really* slow--15mgs. twice a day) after dinner, and I feel a little queasy, but nothing else too remarkable. I really am trying to convince myself to give it a fair shot before talking myself out of it, which I could be inclined to do. Earlier I thought, This is crazy, I can't take a medication that if I eat a sausage I could die. Then I thought, Hell, I could swallow Clorox and die in an obsessive compulsive moment (not that I intend or want to, but as ZeeZee so accurately described I was really obsessing about accidentally eating the wrong thing-- like feta cheese would just get out of the refrigerator in the middle of the night and find it's way down my throat, or that I'd do it on *purpose* just because I can't and am so afraid of it...). Anyway, thanks for asking, and I'll keep you posted. Sorry for the rambling!

Hi Jack;
I couldn't take any yesterday. I felt really nauseous all day. Today I will start again at 15mgs., or I might wait until tomorrow, depending on how I'm feeling. I want to say again that I don't think I'm the best person to guage how you might respond. If I didn't know me I wouldn't believe how sensitive I am to all of these meds. I'll let you know...
