Questions about Nardil/Parnate

Posted by jparsell82 on January 28, 2003, at 7:35:36

Hi... I'm currently looking into trying out an Maoi for my Social Anxiety, OCD and some depression(Social anxiety is prominent). I've read they seem to be pretty successful for Social Anxiety. I've tried a few Ssri's with little success(Actually felt more nervous). I'm curious to see if/how Nardil or Parnate has helped any of you people with SA. Such as, does it make it at all easier to talk to people? Does it help so you don't get embarassed as easily(blush) or get uncomfortable feelings? I have a lot of trouble doing things like getting a job or starting college because of it being hard to talk to people. I was hoping maybe an Maoi and some effort on my part could help motivate me. Another question... do Maois leave you mentally sedated? Because I really don't won't something that will inhibit my concentration/learning abilities or make me tired. I hated Paxil for both those reasons. I also don't want to try Klonopin because it makes you mentally sedated from what I've heard. Thanks for any responses,
Josh

I can't speak about social anxiety since my problem has been depression but I took Parnate with great success for 18 years and never felt sedated or drowsy from it. Keep in mind that everybody's different from everyone else and I've read some very contrasting reactions to these meds on this board. For me, Parnate actually reduced the need for sleep.Think about that. It didn't cause insomnia, but I felt quite alert and active and was able to function well on as little as 5 hours of sleep each night. And it didn't cause any of the drowsiness that the benzos cause. good luck

I've really thought about Parnate because of that. I'm already a normally tired person that sleeps a lot so Parnate has looked pretty good. The only thing is it doesn't effect the GABA receptor like Nardil right? I wonder what to try first.

I can't speak to Parnate as I've never been on it. I'm on Nardil, bipolar and PTSD, and severe social phobia. I am so very sensitive to the Nardil, a one or two day increase can make a whole lot of difference. The Nardil has been a lifesaver for me; as far as social anxiety, it does help some, though not as much as I'd like. It seemed to help more when I was able to tolerate a slightly higher dose like I used to take.
I have such difficulty talking to people, even being around people, in a store or something. I haven't needed benzo's for 2 years, but I'm thinking about talking to me doc about it again. There was a time I could just take an additional Nardil, and my mood was lifted and I felt more confident to go out of the house; I don't want to add any other medication I'd have to take every day for my social crippleness, but I've not been in a good way this week.

Anyone else taking Parnate for Social Anxiety??

Could anyone share if/how it's helped them.

Sorry, I don't know anything about that.

How severe is your OCD? Is it atypical (ie bizarre obsessive thought hard to articulate with cognitive compulsions) or more 'normal' (washing, dirt. locking doors etc.)?

Please read my post on MAOI/OCD below and try the links.

I would try Nardil first-line. I don't believe Parnate affects GABA, as Nardil does.

I've actually stumbled onto that article/study before on socialfear.com. I even printed it out because it fits me perfectly. Ssri's haven't been effective at all. I tried showing my pdoc it and he dismissed it saying it was dated 1992. It kind of pissed me off. I'm currently trying to find another doctor in Ohio that's open to prescribing Maoi's(he wasn't). Anyways, about my OCD, I would say it's becoming more severe and I think atypical. From what OCD sites I've been to, truth-owning, perfectionism, and indecisiveness fit me. I tend to think everyone else's ways/beliefs are wrong. My Social Anxiety is pretty severe too, I've had it ever since I was little. SAD & OCD combined make me very avoidant of people. With SAD it's hard to talk to people... i'm always feeling uncomfortable and like I don't belong. Then with OCD... the truth-owning and perfectionism make it really hard for people to even want to talk with me. By the way, Does Nardil have sedative effects? I really don't want something that will make me sedated. Especially since I want to try to go to college. I don't need something that will make it harder to learn/concentrate. Paxil made me feel that way... almost a dumb feeling. Thanks.

Nardil definitely not sedating for me. The opposite, it made me feel motivated, and feel more energy than ever. Now i am desperate for help with the social anxiety..
