I've always been kind of a big girl, not extremely big or obese, but several years ago I began trying different anti-depressants and of course like alot of people, starting gaining weight. I'll be honest, I don't get alot of exercise, but I drink alot of water, almost nothing else. Anyway, a year ago I had a complete hysterectomy and am now taking Estratest. I also now take Lexapro which is not supposed to make you gain, and I also take Klonopin to take the edge off. I feel like I don't have any control over myself. My weight just keeps creeping up. WHAT CAN I DO? I'm feeling like a fat cow and it makes me feel bad about myself. I am going to begin an exercise program with my kids, we'll see how long I keep that one up. But really, can these medications make you gain weight? If so, is there something to counteract it? I'm afraid to try any herbal or over the counter products because they might interfere with my meds. HELP! ???

Hi Joanie,
Some a/ds are more notorious than others for weight-gain. I gained a lot on Remeron depsite excercising every day 30/60 minutes - but I think another factor would be (I'm guessing) your surgery. Isnt it the less estrogen in your body, the more likely you'll gain? Someone I know who is on tamoxifen gained weight and cant lose it despite excercise. We also all respond uniquely to these meds. I also know someone who gained 60 lbs on zoloft. You could try a higher dose of wellbutrin- or add topomax to your "cocktail." Both may compensate for your perhaps slower metabolism. But you could if you really wanted to start excercising, add some light walking.-dont start out strenous-you could work up to 1/2 hour, that may help too. I share your concern- it is really disheartening to keep packing on the pounds because of a med. I hope to go back to my normal wieght once im off this remeron. Good luck

Try reading "Neanderthin". It's $7, it'll change your attitude on what one should and shouldn't eat.
