side-effects

Posted by EGR on December 16, 2002, at 17:14:17

I'm new to this. I was diagnosed around Halloween and put on Paxil SR... I had a "sexual side effect", so I was switched to Effexor XR... same side effect. Then I was put on Wellbutrin and thought I was going to die! I had buzzing in my head, nausea, insomnia, the bed-spins... I was never even able to test "THE" side-effect... Today I got started on Lexapro. So... my question is how many of you guys have had sexual side effects from Paxil and/or Effexor but NOT with Lexapro?

'THE' side effect is very common and effects
most people to take nonspecific serotogenic drugs, like most that are out there. The most effective ones for depression seem at this time to have this effect.

There are some ways to lessen it, but for the most part, (untill something better comes out) you have to rate your depression and make a trade off.

1. Lessen dosage
2. Exercise
3. Add Wellbutrin
4. Add Busparone or Remeron
5. Add ginkgo biloba
6. Use Viagra

You might want to go with Parnate, an MAOI anti-depressant. Let me divide it into the Pros and Cons.

Pros:
-less than 2% of people report sexual side effects or weight gain on Parnate
-Parnate generally works very well for depression as it is an MAOI. MAOIs are considered the most effective drugs for depression. However, they are generally considered only for treatment-resistant patients: someone like yourself.

Cons:
-like Wellbutrin, Parnate might rev you up to the point where you experience insomnia or other related side effects. Generally these side-effects are reported in 10-30% of people who take Parnate. They often wear off after a month on the drug.
-You have to stop all SSRI use first. After completely quitting the SSRI, you have to wait an additional 1-2weeks before starting Parnate
-With an MAOI, there will be a few foods and drinks you will not be allowed to eat. The number of foods is greatly exaggerated by most people. Important to avoid are aged cheeses and meats and tap beers. A complete listing should be obtained from your doctor, but here's what someone who took an MAOI listed http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010814/msgs/75408.html.

I find this to be frustrating and confusing, but then again, I'm not exactly "thinking right", am I? If I couldn't tolerate Wellbutrin, how would I be able to take that to counteract the sexual side effects? Would it be at a much lesser dosage? (I was on 300mg/day, but even at 150 I was having problems). I wonder what damage we'll find out we did to ourselves by taking these drugs...
