Nov. 8, 2002I've been experimenting with dropping a third of
my dose of lithium every 6th or 7th day--JUST
FOR THAT DAY, because of the daily a.m. diarrhea (sometimes 3 x for
the past three years now), and other side effects. It has worked in the past
3 tries, but today at 4:30, i started feeling very funny -- my head felt even
hotter than usual, and i started to get jittery - spooked,
and therefore took the 2nd lithium of the day and will
take the prescribed third at night; the experiment
today is scrapped.This is such a pain; sick with lithium and sick without it;

Hi. My doc has tried yo use lithium with me several times in the past org to augment anti-depressents and later as a mood stabel when I was biag with BPD. I am a bit of an athloete so the issue of toxicity has been a big one. Now it's totally averted by using anti-seziure meds (depakote, Neurontin, lactimal currently) and mood has remain stable for much longer than before
Good luck... ~tony

Thanks Tony,
Lithium has served me so well for over 20 years;
I have not had one day of depression or mood
fluctuation; it just seems to me that since
the Synthroid (used for lithium-induced hypothyroidism)
was lowered, i have more gastrointestinal problems;
it could be something else. My dr. does not think
that my lithium level is high, but I AM hypothyroidic;
maybe i need one of those slow release preparations.What i am doing now, is skipping 1 cap (of the daily 3)
but only ONCE a week, and that seems to be helping;
but have not done it long enough to say it is the lithium.
It could be remnants of Klonopin withdrawal.Sheesh!
Anyway thank for taking the time to advise; yes
as an athlete your perspiration would really put
you at risk with lithium.Squiggles

Hi squiggles-
My mom is coming down after about 2o years of lithium and it is not going well. Sounds like you are having some ups and downs too. Have your sodium levels been high??? I appreciate hearing your input. Kaylee

I wouldn't say that i have ups and downs - i
am really very stable and happy mood-wise;
i have gained weight, as i am menopausal and
possibly the lithium is actually lower.
Also, since withdrawing from klonazepam, that
stroke thing really screwed up my head temperature--
no kidding-- it was very bad a year ago - hyperthermia
or something.I don't know about my sodium levels. I really think
that is related to K-withdrawal. Also, would
anyone know if the lowered Synthroid dose affects
the lithium?No more whining as I feel fine today - very well;
so maybe dropping on cap every Sunday might do it.tx
