I'm trying this question again - anyone out there on Marplan? or has used it in the past and can comment on its efficacy and side effects? I'm considering using it for panic disorder and agoraphobia so if in fact it has been used for the same diagnosis I'd be particulary interested.
Thanks

I just had a 7 week trial of Marplan for depression and anxiety. It did help the anxiety, but I had horrible side effects such as urinary retention (I couldn't pee), constipation, very low blood pressure, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction and I looked so bad my colleagues called an intervention and made me promise to go see a doctor!
However, in spite of my experience, it is used at Stanford's Bipolar Disorders Clinic with much success, so don't be afraid to give it a try!

Thanks for the response. Besides the side effects you mentioned could you tell me if you also felt either "reved/hyped up" and or sedated? and did you have insomnia? What about the effect on your appetite? Did your doctors offer a solution to the side effects if you stayed with it? If you don't mind my asking are you going to try another MAOI or AD?
Sorry about all the questions!
Thanks

Hi, ZeeZee,
I didn't feel revved up at all on the Marplan or sedated. I didn't have any trouble sleeping. But then again, I always take stuff to sleep no matter what meds I'm on! It didn't affect my appetite, although I did gain a few pounds, but that could have been coincidental.
I have since found a solution to the low blood pressure issue after I went to a consult at Stanford. I think the medication is called Florinef, and you take it with potassium.
I may try another antidepressant in the future. I'm on a lot of mood stabilizers and Mirapex now, but Parnate, another MAOI is on my list as well as duloxetine, Lexapro, Wellbutrin and Effexor. According to the expert at Stanford, these may be more potent than the SSRIs and I have a pretty treatment-resistant depression.
Take care--

In l984 I tried all 3 MAOIs and Marplan was the
best. It worked quickly, and I had no side effects whatsoever {except for insomnia which soon passed.) Marplan energized me but did not make me hyper. I switched to Nardil when Marplan went off the market (I understand Marplan is now available again.) After 10 years, the MAOIs stopped working and now I'm on a 6-med cocktail. No other med has made me feel as good as Marplan did.
