omega-3

I heard that an excess of omega-3 fish oil can cause internal bleeding. Does this mean bleeding in the GI tract or worse complications such as strokes etc?
Thanks.

I don't know about it causing internal bleeding, but I know it's supposed to help *prevent* strokes and heart attacks (through preventing blood clotting).

Omega-3 has a blood thinning or anti-clotting effect which is the reason it reduces strokes overall, most strokes being due to blood clotting.Very high doses would be needed to cause actual bleeding and Eskimos take 18g of fish oil daily without bleeding. However it is generally regarded as unwise to take the fish oil if you are on a drug which thins the blood and in the case of certain blood-clotting disorders.

From what I understand, the cardioprotective
effect of Omega 3, is not so much a product
of its blood thinning abilities, but rather
due to its ability to make the arteries more
elastic, and flexable.

It can thin the blood, but I think It can
strengthen the artery as well. Unless
you are currently taking warafin like drugs
there should be little problem with bleeding
time.
