From your description, it sounds like you may have social phobia or profound social anxiety. Are you taking any medications? Seeing a counselor or therapist?

If you do have the above mentioned conditions, there are treatments available that can be very effective.

I have a similar problem, I know what you're going through--it's very painful--there are ways out though.

Hang in there!

Please consider a psychiatrist who specializes in anxiety/social anxiety/fears, etc. He/she may find a medication to help you. Your problem can be helped, but you need professional help. I hope everything goes well for you. Ask your family doc for a referral to the best psych he knows of.

You are reaching out....that's a good sign!!! :)

When I "wanted" to die, I reached out to people and asked for help. When people "plan" to die, they say nothing and just take action. Trying to commit suicide, to me, doesn't especially mean I want to die. I want the pain to go away. I want it to go away permanently, but there is something about this thing called life that I can't seem to shake. I have GOOD moments and BAD moments, and I just can't let the bad ones override the good ones. The good ones just feel too good.

In my situation, I asked for help on this board several years ago. I received GOOD and BAD feedback. What I learned is that I can weed the bad from the good and get the support/help I need to keep me going. That lesson then, and still today, is what keeps me alive. I can weed out the bad from the good in life, too. I'm certainly not always happy, but I'm not always depressed either. Simplistic...maybe...but I'm still alive. It's working for me.

My thoughts and prayers for you to find your way...to find any way...to thrive and not simply exists in this thing called life.

Please don't give up on yourself. I'm glad you found this board because there are some great people here who care. This is a step in the right direction.

I understand your fear of people because I am terrified around strangers. My tongue gets tied, I tremble and the wrong thing always comes out of my mouth. I've even had people mock me to my face.

A great therapist and/or medication could be in order, but here's another thought. I know it sounds hard right now, but try to find an activity you really enjoy because you'll most likely be good at it. If you can only do it during your spare time so be it. If you can focus on that for a while and get more confident in your abilities, then maybe you can find others who enjoy the same activity and get started there. Online might be a good place to start looking and you might feel safer than conversing in person.
I tell you this because for myself, sneaking time to do things I love has helped me through some very tough emotional or lonely times. One of the things I love to do is knit - it is very therapeutic (and you'll have something to show for your efforts that you can be proud of).

Remember, there are many people, besides myself, who care about you that you haven't met yet. Please don't give up.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) teaches you how to identify/change thoughts that effect the way you feel and behave. Then, it often includes exercises where you're actually assisted in facing the things that trouble you.

For example: Someone who has a fear of flying will discuss what goes through their mind when they get on a plane (or think about getting on one) so they become aware of the thoughts connected to the fear ("The plane is going to crash, I'm going to get sick, etc.") and work on changing them, with the therapist, to reduce the negative thinking. Then, with the therapist's guidance, the person is slowly introduced to flying on a plane. First, they go to the airport--then leave. Then they go to the airport, go to the gate, then turn around and leave. Next, they step on the plane but get off, etc., etc. until the person becomes "desensitized" to flying on a plane--problem solved.

First you work on your thoughts (cognitions), then on your actions (behaviors). Once you achieve your goal, it doesn't wear-off like meds. Also, it can be very effective and often results can be seen in a short time. Sometimes meds and CBT make an effective combination.

Good luck!
