Risperdal, Prozac, and serotonin?

Posted by VK on October 18, 2002, at 17:36:45

I have just been prescribed low doses of Risperdal and Prozac. I came home and did a little research, and it seems that Risperdal works in part by reducing the activity of serotonin. Prozac works by preventing the re-uptake of serotonin (i.e., increasing the activity of serotonin?).

Would the effect on serotonin of these two medications cancel each other out?

Anyone have any experience with using these meds concurrently?

Risperdal is a 5HT2a antagonist and prozac is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. No one knows how antidepressants actually work, but one theory is that SSRIs cause a down-regulation of postsynaptic serotonin receptors. Since risperdal inhibits a particular serotonin receptor it's quite possible that its action is synergistic with prozac, only faster acting. Whatever the biochemistry, the combination of an atypical AP and an AD is very common in treating depression. So don't worry about the combo.

Feel Better,

Britt

I take the two together and find that Resperdal has an augmenting effect on the Prozac. Somedays are better than others.
