Treating ADHD and OCD.

Posted by Frankie on February 14, 2002, at 20:17:20

Hi,

Has anyone ever had OCD diagnosed with ADHD? If so, how were the two treated? I took Ritalin for my hyperactivity problems, and it made the OCD really bad. Just at 10 mg. too! Is there a med out there that would give me some drive and not increase the OCD at the same time? I am on Celexa, which is working for the OCD somewhat well, but decreasing my motivation at the same time. Reply if you have any suggestions for me. Thank you.

Frankie.

Exactly what I was thinking sir. I don't seem to be able to get my doctor to give it to me though. The best part is this. I also have GAD symptoms, being treated with Buspar. Effexor XR would be perfect for me!

Tammy,

Currently, I am on just 20 mg. which is not effective for OCD, I know. But I am also on Buspar too, which somewhat catalyzes the SSRI to work more effectively. This is why my dose of Celexa is so low. Doctor is going to raise it again in about a month, but he wants me to adjust 100% to this dosage.

Hi Frankie, good to finally see someone post an experience so similar to mine. I have severe OCD, and the meds I take for it - zyprexa prozac, effexor, and klonopin, leave me without much drive or "zip" so I have tried numerous stimulants to light myself back up, and stimulate my thinking process. While many of have worked initially, the first day or so, ritalin, dexedrine, (to a lesser extent) and modafinil make my OCD much worse - I don't know if I have adhd, but I definately have trouble concentrating on the combination of meds I'm on. I took a fair dose of modafinil, and found myself violently thrust in the throngs of obsessions, "needing" to crawl under a table in the waiting room of my docotrs office. Perhaps it would be good if we could keep eachother abreast of our experiences with stimulants and OCD.

I read an exerpt from the OCD foundation, written by one of the OCD experts that said, stimulants sometimes have little effects on people with OCD, sometimes improve their symptoms, and "rarely make them worse" - what a raw deal, well maybe we'll find something that will help, I'll try to keep abreast of what your trying, and let you know if I come across anything incredible.

Cheers

Ben

Frankie & temoigneur,
Remeron, at higher doses (45-60 mg/day) has been proven effective for many with OCD. At those higher doses, the adrenaline level is raised...which may give you the energy you want.
It made me feel too edgy.

It may be worthwhile to add omega-3 fish oil in this case.Put the words "omega 3" in the search box above and see what effect it had on others.A dose of 5-10g daily may be worth trying and you should know within a week if it is going to help.

I have ADD and OCD symptoms along with my depression. I was on 60 mg celexa (just switched to lexapro) 1 mg of risperdal which REALLY helps and the doctor gave me 150mg of Wellbutrin for the ADD. The cocktail seems to work well for me although it will be interesting to see what happens with the lexapro. Downside, I've gained a lot of weight because of the risperdal.
