Dr. Breggin's observations are totally without credibility. I can almost declare him, I guess from statements that floor me, to say the he's a fraud or at least approaching that He has made some outrageous statements and written outrageous books and which he says he has now withdrawn and his thinking is different. He's untrained. He's a member of no hospital staff. He has not since medical school participated in any studies to support his conclusions except maybe one. . . . I can't place any credence or credibility in what he has to recommend in this case. -- Judge James W. Rice in Schellinger v. Schellinger, No. 93-FA-939-763 (Milwaukee County Circuit Court, 1997)

The one thing that Breggin has right is this quote of his:
from page 3: "Even the most difficult and out-of-control children can be helped by informed adult intervention without resort to drugs."

Any adult with ADD or ADHD will tell you this is the idea behind having an ADD coach - someone to help you keep on track & focused. But it's almost impossible to provide a separate ADD coach or equivalent for each child with ADD. This is the reason behind improvements seen with ADD children & 'informed adult intervention'.

I confess that i have been skeptical about
the ADHD hypothesis as a "mental disease";
But that is a matter quite distinct from
the analysis of Dr. Breggin's professional
background. If the latter is to be used
as an argument against his quackery practice,
my opinion is that some Board of Psychiatry
or the FDA should have the responsibility
or removing quacks from practice. I hold the
same view about Mormons and Scientologists
btw - if something is against the law then
it should be corrected.

But this has not been done; and so it would
follow that quacks like Dr. Breggin are permitted
by law to practice malpractice. Therefore
the government should be sued.

As for the facts, i don't know - statistics would
be nice e.g. is it true that SSRIs are very
difficult to withdraw from, or that they cause
suicidal tendencies because of impulse control
problems when taken? I don't know the facts.

And so, i draw no conclusion.
