What kind of drug is risperdal?

Posted by bookgurl99 on August 4, 2002, at 18:59:04

Hey,

my doc has recommended risperdal in addition to zoloft to help me sleep. what kind of drug is risperdal and what mechanism does it have?

i don't think i'll be taking anything more, because i think taking a thyroid med and an SSRI are probably enough for me. But I'm wondering . . .

a non-technical answer

You'll probably get lots of "real" responses, with all the pharmacodynamic details of risperdal's action, but this is just my minimal personal experience:

A pdoc long ago prescribed it for anxiety. I found it less effective than relaxation exercises, especially self-"hypnosis", which isn't hypnosis at all but a way of breathing and doing visualisation and sensing one's process of relaxing.

jeez, no wonder it didn't help my anxiety. Or is it supposed to do that, too?

Nope - just looked it up - this is just for schizophrenia.

Reminds me of

roses are red
violets are blue
I'm schizophrenic
and so am I

except I never thought I was. I wonder if the pdoc thought I might be schizophrenic - ?

Now I've checked my bag of old 'scrip bottles - it's there, about fifty white tablets.

A few months ago I took risperdal("the most frequently prescribed antipsychotic medication in the US" good for phycosis, mania, and whatever else ails you) in addition to celexa. My pdoc claimed to be prescribing it to augment the celexa, but I think it was really meant to take care of what he viewed as agitation. In any case, I ended up often feeling drugged and drowsy during the day, but still stressed, and not sleeping any better at night. Also, it didn't go well with alcohol - made me nauseous. I wouldn't suggest taking it for help sleeping.

Well, doctors are certainly willing to try 'off-label' uses, but I wonder if they just like to use us as their little guinea pigs. Like, let's put her on that and see if she stops complaining. geeze!

I don't think I'm gonna use it. My problem is, I am quite anxious about some events in my life that would legitimately cause anxiety. But my pdoc wants me to just relax.

sheesh!

I am bipolar II and love risperdal..it cuts down obsessive thinking, helps curtail rage, and helps with sleep..and mania..I am not psychotic..I haven't had any side effects...it is an atypical antipsychotic..

Atypical antipsychotics are often used to augment Anti-Depressants. I've started using risperdal to help with some anxiety and to augment my AD because I don't get very much anti-depressant affect from AD's. The risperdal seems to be helping some with the anxiety, but mostly it is helping against the mental pain that I experience with my depression.

Risp is an anti-psycotic. I was given Risperdal, 1 mg x 2/day, 2 yrs ago for anxiety, it worked wonderfully but the weight gain I experienced from it was horrific. 40 lbs in a year. I've lost almost all that weight since starting Remeron and Clonazepam 8 mos ago.
