Just dx biplolar--response on meds

Posted by Mandy on August 3, 2002, at 10:29:27

I have always thought I had major depression but after a suicide attempt in May, I am told that I have bipolar with hypomania episodes. It is so confusing. Does anyone out there know meds well and what do you think of what I am now on?? I have been on prozac 80 mg for 10 years and doctor is keeping me on that but has added 800mg Neurontin tid and trileptal 600 mg bid and seroquel 100mg for sleep. It seems like so much medicine altho I must admit I feel a bit better. I am so confused with this bipolar diagnosis and appreciate any input

Hi Mandy,
Well for BP2 it is a lot of meds, but more importantly if it makes you feel better and doesn't have a lot of side effects- I would consider your 'cocktail' a success. If there comes a time when the side-effects are problematic, then repost and there is a lot of variations. I hope you continue to do well- judy

If I were you, I would seek a second opinion. There are lots of ways to treat bipolar II; it wouldn't hurt to talk to another doctor about treatment options. I don't really have any idea about all of the effects that that combination might have; you might think about talking to a pharmacist if you don't want to get a second opinion.

Hi Mandy,

I know there's controversy about using ADs with bipolar disorder. Some say yes, but with mood stabilizers, some say no, it triggers cycling. As Judy said, if you feel better, then you can't argue with success. If you really need more than one drug, so be it. If you have a lot of side effects, or it starts to not work well or doesn't get you as fully well as you want to be, work with your doctor and maybe get a second opinion as Shawn suggested.... There's lots of options you haven't tried yet. For example, I'm sure you've noticed on this board that Lamictal is a popular mood stabilizer with antidepresant properties. A bipolar friend of mine is doing well on trileptal monotherapy.

If you want something to read about your diagnosis and about bipolar disorder in general, try "Bipolar Disorder: A Guide to Patients and their Families." I think the author's name is Mondhiem or something like that. Begins with an M.

Good luck,
Emme
