I know there's controversy about using ADs with bipolar disorder. Some say yes, but with mood stabilizers, some say no, it triggers cycling. As Judy said, if you feel better, then you can't argue with success. If you really need more than one drug, so be it. If you have a lot of side effects, or it starts to not work well or doesn't get you as fully well as you want to be, work with your doctor and maybe get a second opinion as Shawn suggested.... There's lots of options you haven't tried yet. For example, I'm sure you've noticed on this board that Lamictal is a popular mood stabilizer with antidepresant properties. A bipolar friend of mine is doing well on trileptal monotherapy.
If you want something to read about your diagnosis and about bipolar disorder in general, try "Bipolar Disorder: A Guide to Patients and their Families." I think the author's name is Mondhiem or something like that. Begins with an M.
