Regarding the comments made in this thread about the medicinal uses of weed, I have an interesting story you might like. My father is an oncologist, hematologist, a doctor who specializes in treating cancer and blood diseases. Once, as a joke, I asked him if he ever prescribed marijuana for himself when he was having a bad day, you know—to kind relax. My dad isn’t exactly the funny funniest guy in the world, and I guess the humor just sort of went right over his head. He replied, “No, I usually don’t prescribe that THC stuff to alleviate nausea or enhance appetite which is a common side-effect of chemotherapy. It just doesn’t work so great. I use other drugs, that are better.”
But I pressed on, “But Abba, if it did work well would you prescribe it?” And he said, “Sure I would, why the hell not, it occasionally works for a few people and I prescribe it for them. But it usually sucks.”

That’s my anecdotal evidence for either the effectiveness of marijuana as an anti-nausea agent, proof for it is ineffective as an anti-nausea agent, or that my dad really doesn’t have a sense of humor.

I remember from long ago that it usually gave me the munchies (who else doesn't remember that?). Perhaps its reputation to fight nausea comes from that.

No, the antinausea effect is distinct from the appetite stimulation.

James: did your dad mean Marinol, or marijuana? Marinol doesn't always work the same as the weed itself.

I head from a doctor on a radio show that the
medical marijuana doesn't give a "high". The
selective component or whatever is useful potentially
for naseua but that is about it, you need all the other
things floating around in the weed to get the "buzz" etc.
So all the people rallying for it , got it ...

People are working on developing new strains of pot to treat certain conditions. Some pot makes you sleepy. Some really good pot keeps you more alert but you feel real good.
Because of politics and hypocritical thinking, this country is losing money, missing opportunities of a drug with potential to treat illness, and throwing good people in jail for responsible use of a substance, compared to alcohol and tobacco, is so much safer.
People are leaving the country to escape trumped up pot charges that would put them in prison for years.
The law regarding personal use of marijuana is absolutely ridiculous but some politicians will have to have the nads to fight it.
This country lost 3000 people on 9/11. Get the FBI and CIA out of the marijuana war, which they will never win, and put them where they can possibly do some good. That is, if they can quit blaming each other and actually do their job. Most pot these days comes from your neighbors plant. If you live on an average block of houses in this country, someone is growing more than roses on your turf.
I don't know who may have seen Peter Jennings special on pot 2-3 years ago, maybe longer. Excellent information that showed how much pot is being grown in this country and all of the other issues surrounding the evil weed.
How can you throw someone in jail for an ounce of pot while some drinker, after seven DWI's still has a license? It happens. I'm tired of this hopelessly stupid policy that our tax dollars are funding. It's wrong.

Duck!

I read a good book about the politics behind the drug war called Smoke and Mirrors by Dan Baum. There is a review of it here:

http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/media/smoke.htm

I hadn't seen the site the review is on before but it says it's the "World's largest online library on drug policy."
