Has anyone tried acamprosate (Camprol)? It is in phase III studies by the FDA and is a novel drug that treats alcoholism.

Having an alcohol problem myself I did some research on this med and it looks very promising. Is there an expected approval date or at least a hoped for release date for this med? Naltrexone helped me some but this sounds even better. I hope it shows up soon.

Acamprosate also seems promising as a mood stabiliser in that it allows L-Taurine (an amino acid that regulates electric activity in the brain) to get shunted into the brain.

Do you know in which country in Europe, Acamprosate is available?
I wonder if it could work as a mood stabiliser, just like Naltrexone has worked for me.Thanks,
Anna P.

> Anna P.Hi Anna,
I know it is available in England. I'm not sure where else.
The mode of action of Acamprosate is quite different from
Naltrexone. Its definately not an apples-to-apples comparison. There is some clinical interest in Acamprosate as a mood stabilizer
for treatment resistant bipolar (I saw an open study).Naltrexone antagonizes (blocks) opioid receptors.
Acamprosate has 2 modes of action. It enhaces the release
at Gaba(b) receptors and it also weakly inhibits NMDA (excitatory)
transmission.Take Care,
John

Do you possibly know if Acamprosate has sedating or stimulating effect? For example, Naltrexone and Neurontin had a stimulating effect on me, whereas Depakote and Aricept made me depressed after the first doze. Thanks.
