PLEASE read and tell me if I am losing my mind....

Posted by Pamela Lynn on April 4, 2002, at 19:21:26

Although I have had decent effects from being on Effexor XR, I have decided (yes, my Shrink knows) to wean off of the 300mg's that I am on. I want to try to deal with things OFF of A.D. for the first time in almost 17 yrs.

Here is the thing though.....can going off the Effexor XR make one extra sensitive AND extra emotional? And how about headaches? Is this 'normal'? PLEASE INPUT HERE. Thank you.

There's a lot on this board about effexor withdrawl. You might check the archives, though there are some stories you may find discouraging. I for one had little electric shock feelings that took a while to go away. Not unpleasant, just weird. Make sure you GO SLOW in any case. Good luck. It can be done.

Sure I went to the archives......I read nothing about heightened sensitiveness....being more 'weepy' (so to speak), and nothing about having headaches. Thank you for answering me though.....

Lia, Here is a link to the Effexor site..they have had to add info about withdrawal problem because they were so common. It does mention what you have said.....

Most say go off slowly, my doc said go cold turkey and suffer same but for lesser amount...talk to your doc about this...it can be done...but Effexor is one of the harder AD's to get off, I've been there....
good luck

Yes, Effexor withdrawal gave me headaches. I don't know about the emotional sensitivity, but I had headaches, vertigo, a feeling of being disconnected from the world (that was really a weird feeling), nausea and anxiety.

It was like hell when I cut the dose from 300 to 75 within 4 days. But, adding Remeron worked like a miracle! It not only did stop the withdrawal symptoms, but also gave an antidepressant effect no other AD had given.

But that's not the end! I stayed on 37.5 effexor and 30 mg Remeron for one month. Then, I decided to quit effexor altogether. But those horrible withdrawals came back! So, I cut the pill into two, stayed there for 4 - 5 days, then to four and again stayed there for 4 - 5 days. Every time I cut the dose, even on the very very tiny dose of almost 9 mg/day, I still felt the withdrawals.

It is one week now, and I am completely off, but that vertigo and some nausea is still coming and going.

I gave the remaining Effexor pills to my school's infirmary! I don't want to ever see Effexor again:)

Anyway, I hope things go better with you. BUT, I think adding Remeron may help decrease the withdrawal symptoms. You may taper and quit Effexor, while on Remeron, and then taper and quit Remeron too, if necessary.
