Help! I've tried several anti-depressants (zoloft, serzone, wellbutrin, remeron)& the only class that seems to work for me are the SSRI's, However, I can't live with the side-effects. I've been on Celexa for 15 weeks, yet still have diarrhea. I've tried all OTC meds available without success. My PCP and psych. haven't been able to help. Does anyone know of any other remedies:herbal, homeopathic, prescriptions, that work? I'm willing to try anything. I can't keep switching medications, been there done that. Thanks

Clonidine is a possible prescription solution to your problem. Alpha-adrenergic-receptor agonists, especially clonidine, stimulate absorption and inhibit secretion in the intestine. 0.6 mg twice daily can usually be tolerated.
OTC remedies include _berberine_ or psyllium, herbal substances used to treat diarrhea in Asia. berberine was found to be effective than tetracycline for relieving diarrhea associated with cholera and has some clinical efficacy...
Also, in one study aspirin was found to be effective for acute diarrhea in children.
For more detailed information I could send my source article to you by e-mail:

Hi Nala,I have the same problems with SSRI's, too. There has only been *one* thing that has worked for me and allowed me to take them and that is by adding on a small dose of nortriptyline. They come in 10mg caps. With low-dose Celexa, 10mg of nortrip. usually would quell all of the GI distress. With Zoloft, it would require 20-30mg though. Elavil (amitriptyline) is more effective for controlling it-but has a LOT more side effects than the nortripytline.
hope this helps,
Mitch

I've been on Celexa for about 9 months. First few months I had terrible diarrhea. Eventually subsided. Psyllium mixed with juice worked very well for me. Only side effect left is extreme daytime sleepiness.

Try Acidophilus. They come in pill form and you can buy it where ever vitamins are sold. It is safe with no side effects and if it is going to work, it will work right away.
A new purer version of Celexa, with less side effects, should be on the market in June. In the US it will be called Lexapro.
