Wellbutrin Sleep Problems

Posted by spud on March 5, 2002, at 4:54:47

i've recently started taking wellbutrin and my insomnia seems to be progressive. i'm wanting to know what non-drug alternatives there are to getting a good nights sleep. i'm trying to avoid getting on several drugs to counter act each other.
my dosage is 300mg. i'm on day 9. my schedule which i'm still working on is 7am & 3pm.
has anyone had luck with exercise at night, green tea, a better schedule......

Hi!

I also take Wellbutrin (with Celexa) and I've been suffering from sleep problems (no problems going to sleep, but waking up multiple times a night & in early morning) for a while now. Have been prescribed trazodone & seroquel to help with those problems, but both were too sedating.

My new pdoc, who I think is fabulous, recommended regular ol' melatonin, to fix my sleep cycle. He told me to get it from a reputable source, such as GNC, and to take 3 mgs/night about an hour before bedtime. Said it doesn't work immediately, but will help get your sleep cycle back in a normal rhythm after about 2 weeks. For me, it doesn't have a sedating effect immediately and certainly no hangover effect in the morning, but I believe it has produced a more restful sleep.

Hope this helps.
Penny

I take Wellbutrin and Celexa and had sleep problems at first, but eventually these wore off as I adjusted. You can try an herb called valerian. I dont recommend the tea since it has a very unpleasant taste, but it also comes in capsule forms.

I've been on wb for about the same amount of time as you. After a week at 300mg I had to reduce the dosage. My sleep was just getting worse. It takes some time for buproprion and it's metabolites to reach a steady state in your system. The half life for the metabolites is in the 30+hours range. So it just keeps building up in your system. It may be only now that it is really kicking in.

I used the same schedule as you, then tried taking the second dose at 7pm, but that made it worse. The evening dose seems to help some people to sleep better though.

I also sometimes use melatonin. I get good results from 1mg, sublingually.

Good luck,
Mike
