Biplolar Question

Posted by Jason911 on March 3, 2002, at 10:59:07

Jill was telling me that I might be bi-polar. But I don't think I am. I don't seem to go from feeling extremely well to exceptionally down back and forth. But anyway, what has been usually touted as the best med for bipolars? -Jason911 (Just in case)

Depends on what type of bipolar. Bipolar I is the classic manic depresion that you hear about - extreme ups and downs. Bipolar II is less extreme and doesn't necessarily have 'highs' as you may be thinking of, more like agitation, insomnia, starting projects & not finishing, rages, disconnected thinking, racing thoughts. You can go from agitated frantic misery on down to can't get out of bed misery.

The classic med is lithium but there are many others. I'm on lithium and Remeron. My doctor put me on lithium because my antidepressants weren't working, so he added it as an augmentor. In the process, it cleared up alot of other problems that make it look like I've had bipolar II all along. I like the lithium very much, even though I have to get blood work to make sure it's in the right range. Barbara

If you rapid-cycle and have problems with anxiety (mixed stuff), Depakote, Neurontin, Topmax, Lamictal can help. Sometimes people take lithium with an anti-convulsant. I found Depakote+Neurontin combined worked fairly well if I really get wound up.

Hi Jason,

For the symptoms you have been discribing,
I may consider Lamictal. It is also effective
for unipolar depression. It WONT goof up your
sex life. Some people find it a hair energizing
(but not bonanza like Wellbutrin).
Its tricky to dose onto (potential to get a
little rash), but once you reach the thereapeutic
dose there are generally few side effects reported.
Just a suggestion.

-John
