Depends on what type of bipolar. Bipolar I is the classic manic depresion that you hear about - extreme ups and downs. Bipolar II is less extreme and doesn't necessarily have 'highs' as you may be thinking of, more like agitation, insomnia, starting projects & not finishing, rages, disconnected thinking, racing thoughts. You can go from agitated frantic misery on down to can't get out of bed misery.

The classic med is lithium but there are many others. I'm on lithium and Remeron. My doctor put me on lithium because my antidepressants weren't working, so he added it as an augmentor. In the process, it cleared up alot of other problems that make it look like I've had bipolar II all along. I like the lithium very much, even though I have to get blood work to make sure it's in the right range. Barbara
