I've been taking Dilantin Kapseals (XR) for mania. It has no side-effects, even at high doses. When I felt that I had no more mania, I stopped taking it. But now my doctor says that he wants to have me get a blood serum level drawn for it. My question is this: If I were to take a 900 mg dose tonight, would I have a normal therapeutic blood level (300 ml) of it tomorrow if I were tested in the morning? ...
I know I can tolerate any amount of it, so that's not a problem. The problem is that I haven't been taking it regularly-- yet I need to please the doc by showing that I have a therapeutic blood level of the Dilantin. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanx...

Hey STOP NOW! Dilantin is also affects the heart through the sodium channels. In the hospital, we alway put patients on a heart monitor when we "load" them with dilantin. The loading dose is 1000 mg by mouth over 4 hours. So if you take 900 mg at once, you could go into an arrhythmia.Be careful .....

PS You shouldn't have to do this just to please your doctor. He is working for you. Take the meds if they help you feel better.

Thanx...My Mom has epilepsy and at her highest dose it was only 100mg 4x daily (which I thought was a max dose of Dilantin) plus phenobarbitol.
Are you sure you are taking that much-that doesn't sound right.Mitch

////What would your serum level have to do with your driving privileges? Were you having seizures previously? And if so, you're all well now? (Sorry if you've already explained this!)
