Has anyone else had problems with losing weight on effexor or gaining? I heard people say of gaining, but I am only on 75mg of effexor and losing. Funny that I can spend money to go to a weight loss program for the past year and lose more on my anti-depressant. What do you think?

I lost at first on Effexor...maybe 15 lbs but it came back later. Once I adjusted to the Effexor it made me crave carbohydrates. It was a decent antidepressant, though. I could only tolorate roughly 10mg a day due to horrible anxiety, increased blood pressure, and headaches at higher doses. At my low dose it was probably only working on seratonin. At your dose, you might be also getting increased norepinephrine activity, so your lost weight might not come back (lets hope!!)MB

I've been on Effexor XR for almost 6 weeks now and like
yourself, I have lost about 20lbs. For some reason, I've
been really hungry these past two weeks and I'm really hoping
that I'm not going to gain the weight back 'cause it seems
that I've been feeling alot better these days, with the help
of the medication, as well as the weight loss. Let's keep our
fingers crossed that we won't gain everything back.
I was taking 37.5mg per day until today, I increased to 75mg,
let's hope that won't make things worst as far as the weight gain.Joanne (MaKi)

Loss of appetite is a side effect on Effexor, so losing weight is not surprising. SOm epeople have said that they lost weight during the first 4-5 months on Effexor, and then gained. I have lost some in the first 6 weeks on Effexor, we'll see how the rest goes...

Hi,
I've lost 9 pounds in the almost three weeks I've been on Effexor, but I've also gotten back into an exercising. I'm also taking advantage of the loss in appetite to modify my eating habits so that hopefully when the appetite comes back, my habits will be in place and I won't gain back. Healthy weight loss is about 1 - 2 pounds a week, so losing as much weight as we have so quickly puts us at risk to gain it back. BUT - that doesn't have to happen!
Keep us all posted! Good luck!

Lost at first then gained. I am now really trying to get my sugar jones under control. I'm a sucker for carbs.

Just a update on my losing weight, I do know what good weight loss is 1 to 2 lbs per week. I have been working for a weight loss program for the past 3 years. I too have also started to feel better about myself after now going on my 5th week on Effexor. So I have started exercising and making sure I am getting 6 glasses of water a day and fruits and veggies. This could be playing a part in my weight loss also. Even though my life around me is still messed up badly I have got to start somewhere, why not with my self.

I lost between 15 and 20lbs during the first 5 weeks
of taking Effexor as well. Now I find that I've had
more and more of an appetite in the last week or so.
I'm trying very hard to watch my diet but it's sometimes
hard, especially since I'm at home all day. For the
first 5 weeks of taking Effexor, I was only taking 37.5mg,
now I'm on my third day taking 75mg, has anyone lost any
weight due to a loss of appetite while taking 75mg? Please
let me know 'cause I'm getting really worried that I might
gain the weight back. I'm just curious to see if the weight
loss is usually while on 37.5mg!Let me know, please!
P.S. I know I should only be concentrating on getting my life
back to normal but feeling good about your weight plays a very
important role in getting better! That's just my opinion!Joanne

I lost about 7 lbs on 37.5mg. I probably gained some back during the hollidays :-(. I am exercising more now and being careful with what and how much I eat, so I hope to lose more (I'm very much overweight). But the dysthymia and anxiety are my priority. I don't want to gain weight at all, but I can wait to lose it, as long as I manage to heal the other problems. If I start gaining weight however, I will consider changing med.

Hi Joanne,
I've lost 9 pounds total in the past three weeks I've been on Effexor. I had a loss of appetite on 75 mg and on 150 mg as well as now on 225 mg. But I do notice after about a week on each of the doses, my appetite started to come back. I do pretty much have my appetite back now, but I'm exercising alot.
Good luck!

I have just started on 75 mg effexor in a.m. and 7.5mg remeron at bedtime and am praying for decrease in my appetite. Before my last(I hope) bout with depression started.I was walking up to three miles every day and feeling great. I am wondering how long it takes to start getting out of this lazy not wanting to do any thing feeling.I have taken other meds before Celexa worked good for a while then was worthless. My doc says give it time, How long before I try something else? I took 37.5 for 4 weeks now I am going to 75 today with no change in remeron.
This is the end of the thread.
